Album Notes

The term “classical” is loosely used when describing the music in Piano Mecanique. Emotional and sentimental piano instrumental compositions fill this album, from beauty and hope to melancholy and sadness, but without ever truly complying with any traditional classical music form.

Erik Satie meets Mychael Danna in Piano Mecanique. Elegant and wistful piano melodies, often accompanied by strings, are perfect candidates for self-reflection.

lionel Cohen, who will be the first to admit he is not an accomplished pianist, doesn’t set out to demonstrate his virtuosity on the piano, but rather sets out to create intensely passionate and expressive moods that take the listener into another world, a world of lament and longing.

Overall, Piano Mecanique has the sound of gentle cascading notes that disappear into your mind and spiral about like autumn leaves swirling on the street on a windy night. Color, movement and texture are all present here.
