Album Notes

Born in the UK, Johnny Lippiett started his musical education playing in Rhythm and Blues bands and has been working professionally since age 15.

After traveling around North America and Canada learning the language of jazz, his versatile musicianship and uniquely personal style won him a place in the finals of the young jazz musician of the year ('96), which led to work with jazz luminary Courtney Pine. Whilst living in London ('97), he led groups at many esteemed venues such as the Barbican, the Jazz Cafe and the 606 Club.

After moving to New Zealand ('99), Johnny quickly became established as one of the most respected and in demand musicians on the scene.

He has been a featured artist at many of the international jazz festivals and is regularly busy with concerts, recording, radio broadcasts and visiting overseas artists.

As well as his creative work, recent commercial contracts have included work with Air New Zealand, Mobil and Saatchi and Saatchi.

Complementing his success as a jazz artist, Johnny lectures in saxophone and related studies at Massey University and is a clinician for Selmer Paris saxophones.

" A fierce Saxman, of international repute..."
- Evening Post NZ

"... outstanding improvised jazz."
- Wellington Jazz club

" Funky! This is an outstanding release for Wellington-based British saxophonist Johnny Lippet and his band. The nine groove-filled tracks were recorded at Massey University this year and feature some very tasty playing indeed. Although all funky, a lot of terrain is covered, including electric jazz and reggae. ..just gets better and better with repeated listening - and I loved it the first time! Highly recommended.

- NZ Musician Magazine [about Backbeat Project], Jan '04

" Blows with a burning Authority - like Huka Falls with the gates open!"

- Dominion NZ
