Review

I really dig the fact that Liquid Abyss on ?Trenchous Vibes? hooks
> the listener up with a prefab theme. I mean, I?m always capable of
> envisioning for myself when listening to abosrbing electronica, but
> it?s also cool to see what the artist has in mind too. Track by
> track, LA?s liner notes offers brief, sometimes cryptic, always
> smirky descriptions of what each piece is intended to be suggestive
> of. On this double disc set of psy tunage, Liquid Abyss proves that
> minimalism can be uber-engaging, that spartan can be infectious. It
> also shows what a fine act Liquid Abyss is; not everyone can craft
> music that is so unassuming and subdued and yet so hooky and
> addictive. The music also boasts something of a unique personality
> which, I?m sorry to say, is frequently lacking in the psytrance/goa
> scene. I like that kind of music but so much of what I?ve heard
> sounds like one generic comp after another, even when its good.
> Generally speaking Liquid Abyss? music is understated and not
> aggressive (goa, to me, tends toward an aggro personality, even if it
> isn?t, say, the distortion heavy pissed-offness of an
> electro-industrial band). There?s a lot of subtlety driving the
> subdued beats and underwater gloom (I mean that in a good way) of
> this music, which is largely pressed down and blunted, but
> deliberately. This is sort of reverse shouting, a term comedian
> Steven Wright conjured to explain his droll delivery, which is far
> more captivating than its quiet, reserved mien would indicate. It?s
> the same thing here. Liquid Abyss impacts with minimalism employed to
> the maximum. I should note, there are moments when LA moves toward
> aggression, relatively speaking. A prime example would be the last
> track on the first disc, which utilizes drum and bass and break
> stylings with a Crystal Methodesque texturing. But even here, Liquid
> Abyss? take on these stylings is pulled down and restrained, an
> approach which ironically ratchets up the effect of the music all the
> way to 11. You can find Liquid Abyss online at CDbaby.com. Five Stars

REVIEWS

Evokes visions of the ocean with a menagerie of sounds
author: Kinney Adams, The SkyDance Alliance Studio
Just listened to this CD. So often CD's that are concept in nature, don't live up to the concept. This CD does, evoking the visions of taking a journey through a dark vast ocean full of suspense, and occassional groovin bliss. While some of the songs are a bit choppy for my taste, others flow like water itself, especially the title track, Trenchous Vibes. A wonderful menagerie of sounds bound together with a driving rythmic force.
