notes

Human After All, the new album by New England native Lis Harvey, is a collection of ten songs that celebrate the independent spirit.

In the contemporary tradition of women songwriters like Jill Sobule and Jonatha Brooke, Harvey puts the emphasis on melody and story. She has clearly matured into her own sphere of alternative folk, dousing her audience occasionally with catchy pop references and punk-pixie lyrics.

  • It grows!

My love for this CD has crept up on me, as with all good albums my favourite songs have changed and I think I get it more now. All the right words are already in these reviews, to me 'Human after all' is thoughtful, poetic and thinking, the vocal style and delivery are in some places reminiscent of Ani DF but this is a distinct and different album. I like the tender quiet parts best. Listen to the clips here and if you're impressed (as I was) you won't be disappointed by the rest of the album. Well done to Lis Harvey! I will be looking out for more.

  • We are all "Human after All"

Lis Harveys musical interlude "Human after All" is a fascinating look at poetry in motion. The music is tight and eclectic, to give it a familiar, but facinating feel to it. However, the band is called the Lis Harvey band for a reason. (Other than they did not come up with a cute, snappy and/or corny name one night while veggen' in the living room at 4:20 am) Lis Harveys lyrics are the substance that moves this album. If you listen to her words, you hear a heartbeat that really does speak to what makes all of us "Human after all" and she does so not by pandering to the lowest common denominator, but by tapping into the basic emotions that course through everyones veins. Emotions course all through this albulm. In particular, "The Lake song" is one of those songs that harkens back to the June summer nights of puberty that any red blooded American filled with teen angst can relate to. I urge you to check out this Albulm and I myself think that Lis Harvey is one of those performers to keep an eye on for the future.
