ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
Lisa Jane Lipkin is a piano-playing songstress with lyrics as poetic as they are perceptive, melodies as indelible as they are stirring, and a voice as passionate as it is soulful. Weaned on the Beatles & Mahler, schooled in rock, jazz & 60’s soul, Lipkin has opened for Dar Williams, Shemekia Copeland, John Pizzarelli, Garnet Rogers, Beatlejuice (with Boston’s Brad Delp), Tom Chapin, among others, in addition to being a featured performer at countless clubs, coffeehouses & concerts.

Her brand new record is "Flying on Instruments" which she co-produced with Richard Martinez (Across the Universe) and features guitarist Peter Calo (Carly Simon), drummer Doug Yowell (Duncan Sheik), bassist Mike Visceglia (Suzanne Vega) and a cast of talented others.

“Flying on Instruments” reveals Lipkin’s versatility as a singer/songwriter. She is equally comfortable declaring emotional war in "I Do Now" as she is tenderly caressing the ballad “To Begin Again with You”.

Keen at singing about love and the loss thereof, Lipkin also aims to raise social consciousness in the passionate appeal “Does Anybody Hear?” Inspired by Kerry Kennedy’s powerful book, “Speak Truth to Power”, the song was written to open the New Hampshire premiere of “Voices from beyond the Dark”, Ariel Dorfman’s drama prompted by the work of Kennedy’s organization “Speak Truth to Power”.

In addition to appearing on many compilations as well as other artists’ recordings (Aksara, Sandi Kimmel & “Women, Spirit, Song”), Lipkin’s songs, compositions and arrangements have won First Place in a New York State Contest for Environmental Awareness and appear in the soon-to-be-released documentary about Charlotte Bunch called “Passionate Politics.” (Tami Gold)

Her debut CD "Raise the Honey" was hailed as “a body full of truth and emotion” and features “Jayme’s Song” (theme song of “Jayme’s Fund for Social Justice, NH based charity). Lipkin’s second CD, "A Prayer for Peace", is a journey through healing music with original songs, prayers and chants inspired by Jewish mysticism and praised as “haunting and beautiful, carefully and passionately put together”.

A Jersey-girl living in New York, Lipkin admits wanting her music to offer something positive and transformational. “I sing about life, all of it - up, down or in between - and in music as in life...truth rocks."

The new CD has got it right
Just listened to Flying on Instruments and it was truly awesome. The songwriting is genius as ever, and I couldn't help but notice the presence of the electric guitar. My favorites are "Tell Him No" and "For Me." Excited to see her live.

This is a "must have"
Lisa is a singer-songwriter of exceptional talent. Her musicianship not only showcases her special gifts for storytelling, composition and vocal performance but her artistry at the keyboard as well.

Her sultry voice pulls you into musical tales of love and longing, hopes and loss. The stories are familiar yet in her telling, they are somehow new. She writes beautifully about feelings you’ve felt and people you know. And her songs about the world around us are thought-provoking and their messages stay with you.

This is a “must have” CD!

a sweet journey
I'm typically into a harder rock sound, so Lisa's CD is a departure for me. Her song writing lyrics are meaningful and uplifting, and her voice is clear, lovely and strong. My favorite song is Made of Glass. I'd say this is a powerful and beautifully produced CD from a classic singer songwriter. Well worth the investment!
