Album Notes

She sings the way folks used to-- from the soles of their feet, from the down deep of their souls. The way somewhere, in a church at the side of a red clay road, somebody is still singing. Her voice is at once powerful and agile, controlled and utterly unfettered. Lisala sings the song you've been listening for.

Lisala's spirited soul vocals bring together the best elements of R&B, Jazz, Funk and Hip-Hop. She describes her unique style of progressive R&B as "Grit Soul". Lisala's compositions and arrangements have been featured in performances at such New York City venues as BAM Cafe, Joe's Pub, Shine, The Knitting Factory, and SOB's. In 2001 she opened for Motown recording artist India.Arie for ImageNation's Film Festival, marking Lisala's emergence on the NYC underground music scene.

Since the year 2000, Lisala has lent her unforgettable stylings to Burnt Sugar, an ensemble of 14+ musicians who perform conduction- under the direction of Greg Tate. Burnt Sugar is a recipient of the coveted Arts International grant in 2003 and has been featured on BET on Jazz, Central Park Summerstage, and Royal Festival Hall in London, UK among others. Lisala has also performed and collaborated with soul musicians Angela Johnson, Brian Jackson, and Tamar Kali.

Lisala's self written and produced CD of Soul/ R&B music entitled "Get It" was introduced at a sold out performance at NYC club Joe's Pub in October 2003. With a blend of programmed and live tracks, "Get It" features Lisala's unique futuristic sound which is grounded in conversational rhythm and hypnotic melodies. While it's been in the making for more than a minute, "Get It" will pilot you into sonic outer space.

An emotional fusion of neo-soul, funk and jazz, taking you to a futuristic groov

I found Lisala looking for someone who was influenced by Chaka Khan as I am. Lisala took Chaka's influence on her and developed a new soul fusion. Her music makes you feel as if you have entered a futuristic, underground, neo-soul club, where the smoke is in the air and the stage is set with candles and incenses. Chaka she is not, but Lisala she is, and she indeeds represents her own expression of music and I love it!

Get It is the solo, debut release from singer, songwriter and producer Lisala Beatty. Lisala has worked with Burnt Sugar and others, she is currently crafting her own music, which she calls "grit soul". Her influences range from bebop to gospel. Lisala's music is heavy on R&B blended with the blues, soul and electronic sampling. Beatty's soprano voice is filled with timeless passion and melds well with the contemporary programming and production she uses. Lisala is joined by other talented musicians on this polished CD. Lisala's sixteen-track collection is heavy on bass lines, rich acoustics, innovative electronics and many up-tempo vocals. 'Get It' the title track, features snappy, electronic grooves and powerful vocals. 'Independence' flows on a catchy beat, subtle percussion and electronic sound effects as Lisala's vocals soar freely throughout the song. 'Apple Pie' has tart tones mixed with a plump beat, sweet vocals and is topped off with spicy electronic textures. 'The Truth' is a slower more soulful song with layered vocals. Lisala gets it all on her freshman release!
