notes
Singer and songwriter Lisa Lawrence fully intended on becoming a professional dancer until she was inadvertently hit by a truck while crossing the street. While her dancing dreams were put on hold she picked up a guitar and began writing music. Since then, she has made a name for herself in the New England music scene, writing and performing catchy pop-folk with clever lyrics and sweet hooks. Thomas Pizzola of the Hartford Advocate says; " Like any good folk singer, her songs tell stories, but, I am not going to overlook Lawrence's musical abilities. She has a sweet, sensitive voice that helps to drive home the emotional content of her music. Lisa Lawrence sings from the soul."
Lisa is a classically trained musician with a degree in Music Theory, Composition and Vocal Performance from Westfield State College in Western Ma. After moving to Hartford, CT in 2001, Lisa began performing furiously to support her debut C.D. Between June 2001 and Dec. 2002 she performed over 200 times including music festivals, benefits, solo gigs, band openings and open-mics. During this time, Lisa played 8 showcases with Just Plain Folks, traveling throughout New England and New York. She performed at the New England Song Festival with Nashville songwriter Tim Johnson and she played the Joe Davies Folk Festival. Lisa has opened for many Hartford locals including Antigone Rising, Meat and Potatoes and the Swivel Hips. She has also done radio interviews and live performances on WESU at Wesleyan University and WRBS at Brandeis University.
In 2002, Lisa was nominated for "Best Solo Artist" in the Hartford Advocate and was also invited to play at The Iron Horse Music Hall's 50th Open Mic Celebration in Northampton, Ma. She recently opened for the well known folk duo Chris and Meredith Thompson at the Jackson Hall Concert Series in Granby, CT.
Lisa's performance is a solo acoustic set of mostly original songs. Her style is reminiscent of folk music with influences including Joni Mitchell and Joan Baez. There is also a hint of rock and roll. "Led Zeppelin is my biggest influence and not just the soft, pretty stuff, I love to crank Whole Lotta Love and sing at the top of my lungs when I'm in my car." Her songs range from a delicate finger picking style with airy chorus', to fast, hard strumming and belting vocals. Lisa is just as much at home playing a three hour set as she is mastering the opening slot for other performers. She is versatile enough to play set-breaks for a rock band at The Hungry Tiger in Manchester and then open for a folk group in the same week. Her music is eclectic and complements lots of different musical styles.
Lisa is currently working on her second studio album to be released in May 2003. Lisa performs solo and also has a band with Mike Ringland from the Kelvins on bass and Johnny on drums from the Pete Scheips band. Most Mondays you can find Lisa hanging out at Sully's Pub in Hartford where she likes to perform at their award-winning open-mic.

Great Story Teller with a melodic voice
author: Kevin BurgoyneAnd here I thought I know her all ready. I meet Lisa in 1987 and sang along side her till 1993. Although our lives went seperate ways, we always seemed to bounce into each other. She has taken her training to the next level. It was not only a joy to hear her sing again, but to hear her musical maturity has blown me away. I am beyond impressed Lis... I become a worship/youth pastor for God, not knowing Him during those times and wanting to be a singer... She became a singer, knowing God during those times... crazy how life works out.... You were always my favorite PK... oops...was I supposed to leave that out? My Love and prayer for you and your family.
amazing!
author: KerriIt's hard for a recording to be as good as a live performance, but this one is. Six Bucks and Enjoy the Ride are favorites. Lisa's style is all her own.
