Yakshi presents a compelling and otherwordly sound for sacred events and deep listening. With Lisa Sangita Moskow on the electric and acoustic sarod and Mihai Manoliu on classical and steel-string guitars, Yakshi creates an exquisite confluence of East / West lyricism, inspiration and originality.
The group moves through quiet textural pieces, intense improvisations and polyrhythmic compositions with equal fluency. Sangita's formal background includes a 15 year stint with sarod maestro Ali Akbar Khan along with forays into gamelan orchestra, new music and European improv as well as interests in African, Japanese, and Chinese musical forms.
New Music inspires Mihai's work as a multi-instrumentalist, improviser, composer, and teacher. After graduating from MIT in 1984, he continued his musical journey by exploring instruments from diverse cultures: guitars-6/12-string, nylon, electric; fretless bass, sitar, hand percussion and his latest passions (kora, sarod, and oud). Mihai teaches music in the San Francisco Bay Area.

Mellow, sometimes sad, ethereal, and contemplative mid-eastern influenced music
author: Marc
Yakshi is a wonderful blend of the Sarod, guitar and other accompanying instruments. I find that the different pieces each flow well together but each weaves its own story and invokes unique feelings and images. Some pieces are melancholy, some very vibrant, while others are a little whimsical. If you are a fan of world music, Middle Eastern influenced, or the Sarod: I highly recommend it!

Weaving tones of the Middle East and India within a tapestry of new age and smooth, meditative listening, "Yakshi" has the soft warmth to soothe the nerves while also maintaining melodic and harmonic interest to keep the journey fresh and directed. For those looking for a new worldly, instrumental relaxation album, this collection of compositions offers both color and contemplation; it allows the mind to wander without getting lost.
