Plight.. is a poignant, bittersweet and moving collection of great music.

Unfamiliar with her many soundtrack appearances, I first became introduced to lisasmith when I attended a play in Los Angeles called True Story last year. What a find. Lisasmith was credited in the program as "Original Music By"... I didn't get this at first, because plays generally don't have music, musicals do. Well, I was in for a welcomed and surprising treat. Ingeniously, while the audience sits in the dim theatre they slowly realize that the "radio staion" they hear playing in the loudspeakers isn't real radio at all. Instead it was a collection of songs, most by Smith, with radio station commercials and sound effects strewn within designed to portray the sound of music in a hospital waiting room. Very cool and well done. Don't be fooled, this was Muzak by no means, it was a music fan's ear candy. I was knocked out by the play and by Smith's haunting music, both were simply amazing. I found Plight of A Rejected Girl on the Internet and bought two copies. All I can say, is why the hell hasn't the music biz snapped up this woman yet?!? She needs to be on the radio! Smith is a truly gifted artist and rare talent- An intoxicating voice that has so much strength and conviction, yet is so delicate and vulnerable at the same time. Lisa sings every syllable in a way that makes you feel like she's singing about your life, not hers. It's difficult to classify, or should I say 'box in' the sound. It's rock, yes and pop too, yet so cerebral that memories of great sixties acts like Bob Dylan and Janis Joplin are evoked. That's not to say that the music is slow or folksy by any means, often guitars rock out full on in their hard alt glory. It seems Smith has taken the 'high road' indie route to remain true to her talent, but she certainly has the goods to sell-out to the mainstream if she so desired. The only disappointment about this CD is that it's too short! "For All I Am" is a beautiful, heart-wretching ballad about the perils of love. "This Much I Know" is a sobering reckoning that will communicate vividly to anyone who has ever experienced unrequited feelings for another. "Dear John" promises an Alanis Morrisette vibe, minus the anger and twice the mesasage. "Yeah (Sink)" is pure melancholy heaven. If tears could form musical notes they would form this song. Lisa's writing is as terrific as her voice. Be sure to listen for the fiendishly clever hidden track. I hope the rest of the world takes notice of this fantastic trubador of the human condition very soon. Can't wait for new work from lisasmith.

I've been waiting for a new lisasmith CD since I first heard her Moody's Point theme song (For All I Am, which is also included on this disc) from Nickelodean's The Amanda Show. It was worth the wait... In about twenty-five minutes, lisasmith sings of lonliness, desire, anger, longing, and frustration.. Very much in the vein of Alanis and No Doubt, lisasmith's lilting voice draws you right into her world of storytelling, and eventually, you start to wonder if she's telling your story as well.. Standout cuts are an infectious Reply To Dear John where the receiver of a Dear John note tries desperately to make contact with the writer (who hasn't been there?) as well as This Much I Know... A song that keeps building and building finally reaching a guitar driven climax, played by lisasmith herself!! Every song on here is a winner.. If Fetal Anthem doesn't get your heart to sink, you may not have one ;-) In a world of American Idol's and Teenage Pop crap, this CD is a breath of fresh air.. Honest, endearing, and guitar driven music. This one can't be overlooked.
