notes

"Her talent lies in crafting pendulating melodies . . . innovative freewheeling arrangements..." Dirty Linen

New England fiddler and folk singer Lissa Schneckenburger grew up in Maine as an active member of the contradance community, where she cut her teeth as a musician at a very young age. She has continued to explore music throughout her life, leading to her graduation from The New England Conservatory of Music in Boston, Massachusetts (2001). Her list of mentors includes Greg Boardman, Alasdair Fraser, David Kaynor, and Hankus Netsky. While embracing a diverse pallet of musical influences, she still stays true to her New England roots.

Lissa's newest release, on her own label Footprint Records, shows just that. It's a rich and cohesive mix of traditional and original material brought together by the warm tones of her fiddle and sweet vocals throughout. Add to that the energetic buzz of a top-notch band and you've got a match made in heaven. Acoustic guitar, double bass, mandolin, viola, cello, and percussion all add to the traditional fiddle tunes and ballads. This recording will have several CD release tours nationally, so check the web site to see if there will be one near you!

Lissa already has two solo albums under her belt (Different Game 2001, and The Mad Hatter1997) and three band collaborations (Spin 2003, Halali 2003, and Phantom Power 2003). Past praise of Lissa's work includes Jay Ungar (composer of Ashokan Farewell) who says "Lissa Schneckenburger's CD, Different Game is a knockout. Lissa's fiddling is artful, skillful, inventive and full of feeling. I had to listen again and again!" Folk Roots raved "Lissa blows out the cobwebs in no uncertain fashion . . . Lissa Schneckenburger's name is one we ought to be hearing more of."

Lissa has played all over the world as a fiddler and vocalist, including appearances in Russia, Holland, Belgium, Denmark, Canada, and of course, the United States. She has opened for artists such as Alasdair Fraser, Skyedance, Karen Casey, Kate Campbell, and Judy Collins. She has been featured in countless radio broadcasts including "Bound For Glory" broadcast from Cornell University in Ithaca, NY, KPIG radio in Watsonville CA, WBZ Boston, and annual features on Maine Public Radio's "Live at 11". Her television appearances include the PBS specials "A Taste of Chanukah" and "A Taste of Passover" filmed in New England Conservatory's Jordan Hall.

Lissa has you sometimes tapping your toes and sometimes staring wistfully into the distance. All tracks feel very comfortable, familiar yet interesting, like an old friend.

I purchased this after hearing Lissa play live and in a workshop. She's a remarkable musician, and I only wish she had more recordings, as I own all of her cds thus far. This album is a great mix of vocal and instrumental work, all of which I really enjoy. She has a wonderful depth of knowledge and it shows.

  • A beautiful album and one of my favorites.

I bought this after hearing Lissa live and the album is superb. I agree with just about everything everyone else has said in other reviews. Her fiddle playing has a slightly distinctive sound that I can't stop listening to, and her vocals are very enjoyable. The selection of music is superb throughout. In an extremely competitive music environment (my home), I will listen to this disc all the way through on prime listening nights. That's about as positive as I can get about an album.

This CD is superb, outstanding in every way. Most specifically I like Lissa's voice, it is like an instrument in and of itself, I am so impressed. While I truly enjoy the instrumental pieces - her fiddling is amazing and the orchestration with the other instruments beautiful - I would have liked more songs with her singing. Her voice is that lovely, ethereal and lilting. I listen to this CD very often and I know it will stay at the top of my favorites!

This was my first CD from Ms. Schneckenburger, and I'm looking forward to trying more. This CD was a great introduction. While I greatly enjoy the fiddle playing, the songs which she sings are my favorites. Her voice is just beautiful, but there wasn't enough of it on the CD for me. Her selection of songs was charming, and this CD has earned one of the 5 spots in my CD player for a long time to come.

  • A fantastic CD
    author: William Morris

Lissa Shneckenburger's music is a revelation. This CD is listenable from start to finish. The fiddle playing on "Aoife's - Coleman's March" is masterfully voiced and expressive, and her vocals for "Irish Girl" are so poignant it almost makes you ache to find a river to walk beside in hopes of finding the beauty described in the song. "Before They Close the Minstrel Show" still makes me cry. Many thanks to Lissa for putting her music where we can listen and enjoy.

  • An amazing CD from start to finish!
