Old time banjo music with a twist. This is clean, refreshing, haunting, sweet, poignant and a little funky. Original twists on old tunes and old takes on new tunes. Enchanting.

Album Notes

Laurence Sugarman’s second recording “Space,” is out! It features more funky fretless and unique slide banjo compositions as well as a bright, resonant 1920’s Fairbanks Tubaphone banjo. An intimate, poignant solo album of traditional and original compositions, it was recorded with microphones both close in and distant to give it the comfortable feel of music in the kitchen. Like the first album, “Old Magic,” “Space” was mastered by Grammy winner Charlie Pilzer so it sparkles with a crisp presence that puts you in the room with Doc Sugarman, something good to drink and nothing to do but relax and enjoy the music. One first listener said, “I have never listened to a record so many times...I nearly wore it out.”

In the Rochester, NY City Paper, Dayna Papaleo writes: "Sugarman recorded the traditional and original compositions on Space, his lovely new CD, using just banjos and a wistful voice that evoke the nostalgic elements of folk but allow for modern interpretation of a distinctly American genre."

Inside the digipak you can read these words: “Traditional music, folk music, working people’s music, has never been about the music. It’s about what the music does. This music finds us home. It roots us in place. It makes breathing room. It forms space.”

Feels like I'm there...

His voice and his Banjo meld so very seamlessly. When I listen, I feel like he is right there performing. I like how it is non-traditional in that the Banjo is fairly upfront. There is truly a sense of...well, space on this album. I enjoyed the updated yet still recognizably traditional melodies and the sense of musicianship and dynamics.

Missed my exit...

This is my FAVORITE album to listen to in the car during my stressful commutes to and from work, although I have to admit that I missed my exit listening to it once. Larry's music is entrancing and you find yourself breathing along with him and tuning out the rest of the world because he is sitting next to you as he plays songs from the heart and shares his "Space" with you.

A wonderful creation

A wonderful collection of music, talent, style, and feelings emerge as Cuckoo's Nest begins this new creation. Home is a lovely song. Trouble in Mind is heartfelt singing at its best. For Henry reminds me of an intense, important conversation conveying truth. Old Jimmy Sutton brings to mind enjoying a front row seat experiencing simple enjoyment. Enjoy this and share it with friends!
