Album Notes

Living Space is a talented group of friends who hail from the San Francisco Bay Area. They write, perform, and record their own music. Their two-tone style draws from ska to punk to rock which creates an eclectic brand of music with some rock & roll edge, catchy pop melodies, and the feeling of soul music.

Their use of multiple vocalists add just the right amount of variety to their catchy tunes, which keeps their sound fresh and interesting. Bands who have inspired them include Blur, The Smiths, U2, Radiohead, Weezer, as well a locals musicians Bart Davenport and Green Day. Living Space consists of Coop R. Fransis (vocals, guitar, songwriter), Trevor Contreras (guitar, vocals, songwriter), Jamie Quon (drums), and Kevin Costa (bassist, vocals, and songwriter). The band was formed in 1992 and took a couple of years to develop their songwriting and musicianship. Living Space released their first single "Wrapper" in 1995 and it was well received. That same year they began booking and playing live shows in local bars and clubs around the Bay Area. After a year and a half of playing shows, Living Space released their debut CD "Next 11 Exits" in 1997 under their own label, Dark Matters Productions.

Finding that love for what you enjoy makes it all worth the effort. That idea definitely holds true for band. Living Space is entering a new period of existence. They are very excited about their new material and enjoy the opportunity to share it with their fans. The self-recorded, "Fade into Existence"was released in August 2002. Most recently they have been featured on a Shut Eye Records compilation that has been picked up by many college radio stations across the country.

This Bay Area quintet plays an eclectic mix of pop, soul, R&B and rock, much of it with a '60s psychedelic feel, although they're not overtly retro. "Souled!!!" stands up with a rowdy shout chorus, "Third Party Call" is a catchy blend of sweet melody and crunchy punk guitar, and the lovely, wistful "Oregon Trails" and "Close Your Eyes" might appeal to Morrisey fans. Living Space shows their experimental side with "TRAFFIC," an atmospheric blend of out-of-tune piano and honking car horns, overlaid with the sound of a scratchy phonograph record. Overall it's a good record, a little unfocused but that's to be expected from a self-produced debut LP.
