rock, delivered with style, stature and intent
author: Lee Bradfield
Review : Lix s/t (1988) After the breakup of the almighty Texas AOR
legends Hobbit (a breakup which ultimately proved temporary), Paul "Turk"
Henry simply had to keep rocking, hence the formation of this smokin'
unit, which focused on a somewhat harder and heavier approach without ever
losing melodic integrity. It's party time !! With these words the opening
track is ushered in, taking us all back to a time when it was commercially
acceptable to be upbeat and positive instead of shoegazing and moaning. Now
on this album we're confronted with the very blueprint of melodic hard
rock, delivered with style, stature and intent, not to mention
consistency. It was a common trait of late 80's hard rock albums ro
contain numerous worthless filler tracks, but I'm happy to report that
every track here is a winner, including the 2 bonus cuts. On tracks like
Out On The Street and Be What You Want To Be, shades of Whitesnake can be
heard, while comparisons to Ratt could be made on Overdrive and Angelaine.
Even the revered Dokken comes to mind during tracks like Want Me Love Me,
Long Way Home and Guardians. In all these cases there's an important
difference to note - instead of being copycats, Lix actually surpass the
bands mentioned above with their intense grasp of melody and virtuoso
musicianship. To best describe Paul Henry's vocals, imagine a combination
of the very best of David Coverdale and Don Dokken, and even then I'm not
sure I've done him sufficient justice. This album is going to have a
profound effect on hard rock fans everywhere, especially those who loved
the "hair rock" days but were dismayed by the inconsistent quality of most
of those albums. I can think of no album to better sum up the spirit of
1988. Lee Bradfield

Back to the glorious 80s...
author: Stefan Wille
This album brings that special spirit of the 80s back to life! Surely, Lix should not be compared to that mega-selling, hyped groups of that age (you know who I mean...), but their music is true, honest - and pure fun! So, give them a chance and listen to such great songs like "Out on the streets" or "Guardians" and feel young again!
