notes

LJs new CD is a collection of intricate, luminescent gems.
-DAVID WILCOX

LJ Booth is as literate as they come. As a lyricist he has the light touch of Lyle Lovett, the unabashed honesty of Leonard Cohen and the sprawling, joyous life of Walt Whitman. The plainness of his imagery and the economy of his phrasing is only made more effective by his glittering guitar parts and the simple grace of his songs.
His vocal approach also possesses the effective simplicity of Lyle Lovett with a little Gordon Lightfoot thrown in. On the more raucous tunes like "Hold On!" and the fiddle-driven "Changing Sky," Booth is still completely in control, driving the songs straight through to their satisfying conclusions. But it's on the quiet moments that Booth really shines, wheeling through joy, freedom and longing with simple grace.
-PERFORMING SONGWRITER

LJ Booth is hands down one of the finest songwriters I've had the pleasure to encounter. The Ox That Pulls the Cart is a recording of rare insight and artistry.
-CARRIE NEWCOMER

Few writers I know are as musical, literate and elegant. I love his stuff and can't wait for each new song, each new album. The song, "The Ox That Pulls the Cart" is the kind of song I wish I wrote...it's a total gem.
-JOHN MCCUTCHEON

...a master craftsman of incredibly profound songs, Booth is not as well known as he should be. It has been a long, but worthwhile wait since his last album in 1992. The songs here are fascinating, including the incredible, "CLUTTER". The fingerpicking is as good as the writing, and the whole album holds up, from start to finish. Highly recommended.
-SING OUT!

"To say that L.J. Booth's new CD THE OX THAT PULLS THE CART is intensely personal is an understatement. To say that it's a new level of achievement for this singer-songwriter, is too. To add that it hangs its hat on some of the best songwriting this accomplished wordsmith has ever penned and includes some topnotch musical accompaniment, would also be correct."

  • Great CD
    author: Aaron Lowe

I have heard Sam Pacetti play "Box Elder" at the Milltop in St.Augustine many times and it never gets old. Well, it's about time I got the original. I love it. I enjoy listening to the entire cd. I am also a folk musician and find inspiration in many of L.J's songs. Thank you for a wonderful cd.

  • Wonderful, moving, deeply emotional, meaingful music.

I had heard David Wilcox play one of L.J.'s songs in concert "Box Elder". So I got the CD for that one song. However every track is great. I especially liked and related to "Clutter". L.J.'s lyrics on the album are pure poetry, superbly written, cohesive, and loaded with depth. You need this CD!!

  • Great CD!

Great CD! My wife and I heard "Box Elder" at a David Wilcox concert and were hooked. That song is our favorite on the CD, but the whole album is worth a listen.

  • Heartfelt Renderings
    author: Nancy

Recommend this heartfelt rendering from an artist I just discovered! Wide variety of songs all reflect the artists work as a songwriter and minstrel.

  • Poetry in music...this CD will make you more aware of life.
    author: Andy Rassler

The first thing you should do is forward to the 12th cut of this CD. The Boxelder Song will AMAZE you! With the sharp eye of a poet and guitar accompaniment that is right on, every cut of this CD has something to offer. From the quiet angst of the first song, to the wonderful chaos of Clutter, I loved every song. LJ's voice is mellifluous and SO easy to listen to! I WILL buy more of his CDs!!

  • One of the fresh open tuning folk singers on the scene
    author: Lenny Kirschner

One of the fresh open tuning folk singers on the scene. The music is too intellegent to get mainstream airplay but for those who like poetry put to music by someone who plays music instead of playing around with music..then this is a good pick.
