Album Notes

I had heard from a friend in my book club about these art books written by Nick Bantock. One day, she brought me the first book, Griffin and Sabine. I was awakened early the next morning, and took the little story out to my sunken garden to read it. By six o'clock in the morning, I was struck by the need to know how the story turns out, and how to buy the sequels in the Trilogy.
Having faith that Griffin would eventually locate Sabine and their love would grow, I sat down with my guitar to capture the essence of the haunting tale, without implying anything further of my own interpretation.
In the studio, Demetrios and I worked with hand claps, thigh slaps and finger snaps to obtain the percussive motif running through the song. I had heard an East Indian rain song that had utilized a sound like that, and manufactured my own version of it.
The idea was that school age children on the beach, would be playing face to face and singing the ballad, while clapping each others' hands and snapping their fingers and slapping their thighs. This is a cheap, tribal game in everyone's culture.
When I heard the Spanish flavored guitar interlude that Demetrios added to the song, I played it over and over. This story and song will always unfold my imagination as it did from the first.
