I'm embarrassed to admit I hadn't heard of Llyn Foulkes before discovering this live recording at CD Baby. An amazing 70-year-young pop art painter (among other things), Foulkes masterfully employs his gruff, dark wit to skewer the corrupting qualities of the American Dream. The music he makes here with his machine is a delight: it sounds like a jazz trio jamming in a bicycle shop. I can honestly say this is the first CD I've purchased since November 2004 that's restored a grin to my increasingly cynical and curmudgeonly heart. A bit brief at 37:06, it's a treasure nonetheless. I only wish this performance was also available on DVD. It must be a real treat to see this one-man band in action.
