Album Notes

Beth Lodge-Rigal is a singer-songwriter, a charming, down-to-earth performer, whose lyric style is smart, elegant, simple, poetic, deep and true. "Her songwriting showcases nearly flawless manipulations of rhythm and melody" and stories both personal and profound which, in the tradition of the best songwriters examine what it means to be human and what gives meaning to our lives.

Having grown up in the midwest, and currently residing in Bloomington, Indiana, Beth has entertained audiences from California to Connecticut. She has independently released three CDs, the most recent being Children On A Ride (2003). She is an award-winning songwriter and has shared stages with the likes of Richie Havens, Greg Brown, Gillian Welch, Carrie Newcomer, Brooks Williams and others. In addition to her work as a performing songwriter, Beth also teaches songwriting workshops to adults and children, sings back up vocals whenever possible, and raises two daughters with her husband and gifted musical partner, Dan.

Children On A Ride is already being touted as Beth's best work so far. It's a "no fluff" recording of 11 gorgeous tunes, finely crafted and presented with spare adornment in order to allow the songs to take the spotlight. From the thundering Edna St. Vincent Millay to the profound simplicity of Quiet As Snow, this is a recording that encourages listening in a quiet place, multiple times. There are irresistable toe-tappers here, hauntings, and goose bumps, literary and historical excursions along the long, crooked road Beth Lodge-Rigal travels. A wonderful ride!

Good but no clear cut singles

I really like Beth and so was really looking forward to this her first release in four years. I have both her previous albums, and think her sound has matured somewhat since dream table. But I am sad that whilst perhaps this album sits more comfortably within the folk genre I miss the choruses and energy of early works. Similarly much of the middle of the album seems geographically localised revisiting similar themes (and in fact you could even parallel two or three songs) from previous outings. I am not saying its a bad album, far from it, I feel lucky to have it in my collection, I just wish it was a bit more "dangerous", go on Beth, do a song entirely out of character!

Been listening non-stop

Beth Lodge-Rigal's voice and songs, but unfortunately not her name, had been stuck in my head since I heard her perform years ago in Indiana----and I've been in Washington state for five years now! Finally managed to find out her name, and was thrilled to find her CDs on good ol' CD Baby. Her songs are simply beautiful. I love the music and tunes of them, but it's her voice and words that make them really come alive. Listen to the clip of "Thank You...Help Me" and you'll see what I mean. This CD hasn't left my player since I got it. Thanks, Beth! Thanks, CD Baby!

The CD is excellent. Beth has a beautiful voice. She conveys so much emotion with her tones. The words to her music is so compelling. I love to listen to this CD. Sometimes I here new words that I hadn't heard or noticed before. Beth has universal appeal. I never get tired of hearing it.
