Album Notes

Born in Maysville, Kentucky to Allene and Bill Soward, Lolene is a natural born creative artist. Lolene's mother imbued a love for music in Lolene from her earliest years and encouraged Lolene to follow her dreams of singing and playing guitar. Lolene learned early at her mother's side as she watched her mother and aunt Francis perform as the Singing Dugan Sisters. Allene's had traditional country and folk roots, and Emmylou Harris was her most favored artist.

Lolene received the gift of creative writing from her father. As a young man, his accomplishments included writing jokes for George Burns and co-authoring a novel, The Damned Don't Cry. The novel was subsequently produced as a major motion picture starring Joan Crawford. Lolene absorbed her father's wit and critical thinking skills that she applies today in her songwriting. Lolene's music will always reflect her love for them.

Lolene's school years included a sharp focus on music. She sang in the school chorus, learned to play guitar, and performed with friends. In 7th grade, she and two of her friends won a 4-H Talent Show and subsequently appeared on Lexington, Kentucky television where they sang Paul McCartney's "Yesterday."

Lolene has formed many enduring relationships based on her music interests, and she never passed up an opportunity to make impromptu stage appearances with these friends. She truly became a student of music, rooted in traditional country and folk. Like her mother, Emmylou Harris has been a dominant influence on Lolene's music for many years. However, Lolene has been influenced by a broad range of artists such as Dolly Parton, Carly Simon, Rusty Young, Bonnie Raitt, Shania Twain, Trisha Yearwood, the Eagles, and the Dixie Chicks. Obviously, Lolene's love for music extends to a wide variety of musical expressions.

Lolene has always dreamed of performing and writing music, and she kept this dream alive in the face of adversity and the almost constant skepticism of the world's naysayers. Life sometimes seemed to place interminable barriers between Lolene and her dreams. Lolene once lost her guitar due to financial struggles and a failed marriage. Some skeptics seemed to revel in her struggles.

In 1989, Lolene met her husband, Richard, and he quickly learned about Lolene's dreams and recognized her special talents. On her birthday in 1989, Lolene received a new guitar, the one that she plays to this day. She pursued training in voice, advanced guitar, and electric bass. Lolene has also developed an affinity for the harmonica. Lolene began to believe that her dream could become her reality.

By the mid 90s, Lolene began to turn her attention to writing. She drew upon some ideas that dated back to her school years. While she had never extended those early ideas to paper, these ideas had been a constant companion in her own mind for years. Her first song, "Wasting Your Time" has its roots from those early days. Subsequently, Lolene wrote "With Someone," a ballad inspired by and dedicated to her mother.

Now, Lolene is actively engaged in her writing and works daily on new song ideas. She draws from her own life experiences for her songs. Lolene's songs reflect a keen observation of human relationships. For example, "With Someone" is based on Lolene's observation that long term relationships sometimes end when one person decides the grass is greener. When this happens, it can be difficult for the one left behind, whether a spouse, a parent, or a very special friend. Lolene frequently begins the writing process with a catchy phase that forms the nucleus of a chorus. She then creates the verses around the chorus. Examples of this process can be found in "Don't Wake Me Up" and "The Deal's Gone Down."

Lolene holds a special place in her heart for Mr. Jimmy Fortune of the Statlers. He has supported her and encouraged her to never give up her dream. In recent years, Jimmy Fortune has given freely of his time to offer advice and comment on her songs and singing. Recently, he was so kind to say he was a "Lolene fan." Lolene is forever grateful to Mr. Fortune for his kind words of encouragement and support. They have been instrumental to Lolene's keeping her dream alive.

In 2000, Lolene prepared demo tapes of three of her recent songs and sent them to a few publishers of country and pop music. Colonel Buster Doss responded and encouraged Lolene to pursue not only her writing interests but also her singing. In April 2002, Lolene completed her the studio work for her debut CD, "Lonely Dealin's," all under the artful eye and ear of the Colonel at the Bayou Studio in Nashville, Tennessee. Obviously, Lolene can never express the depth of her gratitude to Colonel Doss for opening doors and giving Lolene an opportunity to convert her dream into reality.

"Lonely Dealin's" is a twelve-song anthology about human relationships. Eleven of the songs are original materials. Since July 2001, Lolene has released six of these songs as singles to worldwide radio market, and three of these songs from the CD have received wide airplay around the world to appear on the various Top 40 charts in Europe and Australia. The airplay for the lead song on the CD was sufficient to propel "Slow Burn" to #2. Worldwide airplay of her 2001 releases from the CD were sufficient to propel Lolene to the #73rd most played artist in the world for all of 2001. Airplay for her first release, "Don't Wake Me Up" was so strong that Lolene rose to #11 on the same most played artist chart during the last two weeks of July 2001.

Lolene invites you to explore her web site and let her know what you think about her music. Lolene is hopeful that fans will find the entire collection of songs on "Lonely Dealin's" worthy to include in their personal collections.

REVIEWS

Another excellent singer/songwriter!!
author: Doug Morris, Indie Music Appreciation Group
The album is offered as a collection of songs dealing with a woman's prespective of a troubled relationship, but for my two cents worth, it's a good collection of 12 really fine songs. Of course, I'm a man, so what do I know, right? That said, allow me to point out that Lolene wrote 6 of the songs by herself, and co-wrote another with her friend Suzanne Smith. There is an excellent mix of songs amoung these tracks, some toe tappers and some slow ballads, and they're all pretty good. I do have some favorites though. First one I'll talk about is "What Am I Gonna Do", because this is a pure country, slow tempo ballad that would be perfect for close dancing with your sweetheart. The instrumental work in the background is also pure country, with lead guitar, steel, keyboard and all being gloriously aided by one some of the best fiddle work I've heard lately. The combination results in a song that just cries it's heart out right there in your speakers! I also liked the instrumental work the band did in "I Know Where You're Comin' From", especially the piano breaks. I have often admitted to being a fool for a good piano sound. Lolene had an excellent band behind her in the studio and some mighty fine sound work too. It shows in every song in the whole album! Other "best of" songs are "The Deal's Gone Down" which has a hint of the blues showing through in it, "You Say The Word", "I Don't Mind The Rain", "Me Without You", and "You Never Come." Want a general ruling on the album as a whole? It's hard to beat an album with this many really good songs on it, and when you consider that this is Lolene's debut album, it's hard to see how she'll be able to do better on her next one, but I'll bet she does. BTW, the next album is supposed to be out in early 2004.

VOICE OF EXPERIENCE
author: JAMES WILLIAMS
Sometimes you just know. This is the voice of experience portrayed through a selection of cool melodic songs. There is heartbreak almost coming through but held by her own strength and place in the world. A very strong collection but check 3/4/8/9 and 10..

The Album entitled "lonely dealings" takes the listener on an emotional roller c
author: BJ Colt From Country Music Scotlands New Oline Country Music Mag
Hi Folks, First of all let me thank Tanya &Alan of CMS for the opportunity to contribute to such a milestone in the history of Country Music in Scotland. It was a pleasure and an honour to review a CD by a rising country singer song writer called "Lolene". The Album entitled "lonely dealings" takes the listener on an emotional roller coaster ride. The warm sultry vocals of Lolene create the depth of feeling Enhancing your journey. Each song deals with differing aspects of relationships,Including all the complex issues that make this emotional journey one that can be easily related to.The traditional sound of the album has a contemporary feel as the sound of steel guitar and fiddle give it that real country flavour. At the same time there is a country rock influence often heard in the lead guitar breaks. Lolene has written most of the tracks on the album and while the CD is her first, it will not hopefully be her last. Two songs stand out from the rest of this well produced CD, "slow burn" and "don't wake me up". Highlighting this singer superb song writers obvious talent. Looking forward to Lolenes next Album and wishing her every success for the future. Keep a check out on this page for a more in depth interview with Lolene.

Lonely Dealins by Lolene is an original sounding great voice
author: Jim Moulton
This is Lolenes's debut CD and it is a very good one.Lolene has a great country voice and wrote many of the songs herself.Lolene's motto is "Country Music with an attitude" and you can pick that up in the rock influences you hear in her music. Her voice is very emotive and reminds one of greatness. This CD was recorded at Bayou Studios in Nashville, Tenn.Produced by Colonel Buster Doss(who also wrote one of the best songs),who is a legend in this field of indie country music, winning numerous awards.George Clinton is the Sound Engineer.Danny Parks provides all of the guitar work and is the sessions leader.Larry Franklin(fiddler extraordinaire) provides the excellent fiddle work. The CD overall has a well balanced very good quality sound.7 songs are written by Lolene and the Colonel throws in a dandy and the other 4 are written by a variety of people. Most of the CD has a contemporary country sound with a lot of electric guitar and even some dual guitar breaks and rock sounding drums.Any nuances were left outside the door, this CD rocks. The one song that sort of breaks this mold is "The Man I Love"(Colonel Buster Doss)which is a traditional country shuffle, great song, band is really in a groove and Lolene is at her best sounding a lot like Patsy Cline. This is one of my favorites.A lot of the CD's sound reminds me of early Linda Ronstadt when she had Andrew Gold playing guitar for her and was at the height of her country phase. Slow Burn-Great upbeat country rock number, great vocals, written by Lolene. You Say the Word-this is a very nice country ballad with some great guitar breaks I don't mind the Rain-Another Lolene written song, acoustic shuffle, great guitar and haunting peddle steel, great lyrics(my favorite) Don't Wake me up-Great self written upbeat country rock ballad.Great Song. The Deals Gone Down-upbeat southern rocker, great fiddle break, this one rocks I Will-Beautiful Ballad, rock influenced-this is a very nice country ballad with some rock influences, love this song. My advice is go to Lolene's site and buy it,this is good as anything coming out of Nashville today.I know, you are waiting for me to come out with my negative side of the CD,this sounds too positive for me.Well, how about don't lose it.It would have sounded better if it had been mastered, but the sound quality is excellent the way it is. God Bless-Jim
