"The Lonely Forest's debut album overflows with youthful passion. The sounds on Nuclear Winter are lush and epic. For such a huge sound you'd expect a symphony, but it's really made by just three young men (two of who aren't yet of legal drinking age). The piano is explosive—loud and nimble, and the driving force of each song. The bass is fluid and strong; the drumming is sharp and precise.
From the pretty minute-and-a-half prelude to the droning, almost 20-minute-long end jam that accompanies the world's demise, there's no lack of drama. From the seclusion of Anacortes, the Lonely Forest have created a new world of their own, an alternate dimension sprouted from the imaginations of boys with a lot of space, time, and probably pot at their fingertips." "Give this album a serious listen - I listened to it on an red-eye flight on an airplane, with nothing else to pay attention to but the stars outside my window. Listen to the lyrics and close your eyes - or check out the album art: it’s gorgeous. It’s a multifaceted experience of art and story that will leave you awestruck." - Justine-Marie for Mercurial Sound
"the loudest bass/drums/piano trio on the planet." - The Seattle Powerpop Blog
"These guys came out of no where...and blew my mind!" -Jack Endino (producer: Nirvana, Mudhoney, Soundgarden)
"I saw the Lonely Forest...and shit my pants!!" - A popular high school student

One of the Best new albums
author: Zach
The Lonely Forest has defied all expectations and created a CD the likes of which is rarely seen. Not only do they sound like nobody else you've heard before, but they are incredible. Van Deusen's voice has this inherant prettiness to it that truly comes out throughout the album, particularly on Lessons in Miscommunication and Leader Holding His Eyes. The lyrics have an poetic quality to them that doesnt force you to lose the story. Van Deusen Shines on Letters Part II particularly well. Sturgeon's Bass is amazingly solid, with the perfect underline of the album, it backs the piano of Van Deusen (which shows a talent not seen on previous albums) perfectly, especially during the chorus of Soil Silt and Clay. Then there is Braydn. Undoubtably the best drummer I have ever met. The drums completely blow my mind. The album is unashamedly a concept album, but it is one of my favorites of all time. Find a way to get this album. You won't regret it. Guaranteed.

But it isn't the Anacortes trio's monstrous orchestration that makes Nuclear Win

But it isn't the Anacortes trio's monstrous orchestration that makes Nuclear Winter notable—it's the story. Nuclear Winter is a lofty concept album—"A space rock odyssey into an alternate dimension!"—about a young man living in a tragic future. It's 2563, and earth is so technologically advanced and overpopulated that the world is doomed to end by rapid global warming and/or the nuclear holocaust.
Through songs/chapters about space travel, war, fearlessness, and hiding out in a room while listening to Pedro the Lion's Dave Bazan, our protagonist experiences a gauntlet of emotions while watching the world collapse upon itself.
From the pretty minute-and-a-half prelude to the droning, almost 20-minute-long end jam that accompanies the world's demise, there's no lack of drama. From the seclusion of Anacortes, the Lonely Forest have created a new world of their own, an alternate dimension sprouted from the imaginations of boys with a lot of space, time, and probably pot at their fingertips.
