"The Lonesome Sisters’ sound is straight out of Kentucky or West Virginia. Intricate acoustic guitar, upright bass and shimmering harmonies fill these beautiful bluegrass ballads. "We try to open the door in this life here below, but only God’s golden key will unlock our new home,” sings vocalist Sarah Hawker in "God’s Golden Key." "Oh Sleeper" begins with banjo and Hawker’s powerful vocals: "One terrible beautiful morning…I’ll shake off time from this body and meet you in that eternal home." Thoughts of home and jilted lovers populate Going Home Shoes. We even get some old time religion as Hawker croons “You want forgiveness, tell it to Jesus that’s his job not mine.” A few traditional tunes make an appearance, and it’s a testament to the Lonesome Sisters’ songwriting that listeners’ ears will easily slide from the traditional to original without noticing any change in style or song quality." Going Home Shoes features special guest and dear old friend, Riley Baugus, old-time fiddle, banjo, and guitar player extraordinaire, singer and performer on the film soundtrack Cold Mountain and subsequent Great High Mountain Tour. Riley has since gone on to perform with Willie Nelson, Allison Kraus, Dirk Powell, and Tim O'Brien. This second album from The Lonesome Sisters, produced by Sarah, Debra & Riley, stays true to the sparse, soulful intent of their earlier work, blending their original songs with more traditional pieces. June Drucker, bass player from the groundbreaking all-female string band, The Heartbeats, and Judy Hyman's Horseflies plays acoustic bass on this recording, adding her beautiful, skillful touch.

I loved one album by these ladies so bought another and have been just as delighted as with the first. Plus, listening to Baugus' guitar work on the songs adds another whole level of enjoyment.

Sparse and heartfelt
author: Martin Roberts
Why these fair young maidens should be lonesome I don't know but this is certainly an excellent album. Sparse accompaniments, raw production, heartfelt songs and beautiful harmonies generate an overall feeling of rare and delicate authenticity. They seem to be acquiring a lot of UK reviews on this page - when are they coming over here?

Was delighted with CD Baby delivery of my order of Going Home Shoes and two other Lonesome Sister's CD's. I have been a Riley Baugus fan..he's from Winston Salem, N.C. I heard the Lonesome Sister's perform for the first time at Merlefest this 2007 and am now a new fan! Their harmonies, musicianship, and plaintive voices are wonderful.

The Lonesome sisters are great-the best Old Time music I have heard in a long time. I bought all three of their CD's. I have passed the word to others, who have also bought all their CD's.
