Album Notes

Reverie composer/guitarist Chris Lonsberry follows up his acoustic solo, Forever Roads, with this electronic release.

While a definite departure from his previous work, Diode Melody still retains an emphasis on melody - bringing a warmth to the world of electronics.

Even if you don't like electronic music, listen again.
----
Diode Melody is composer/guitarist's Chris Lonsberry's departure into the realm of vintage electronic composition. The title is apt since Lonsberry has a gift for strong melody and uses it as a foundation for his work here. The sound is a mixture of analog and digital synthesizer timbres with uncomplicated melodies and arrangements. Lonsberry often uses his melodies as a foundation for which a track might evolve into a cycle of shapes and return. Instances of techno appear throughout as well giving this album a very well rounded feel, heightened by the return of its opening theme as a sort of return home after a long journey..

"Another cd from multi-talented C.L. I can't get enough of this guy, so I'm glad he keeps sending me his cds. This one's an instrumental album of 50 minutes, 12 tracks, and keyboard delights. If you're into hard techno, look somewhere else. But if you like pop just this side of new age, here ya go. You will be spirited into the right world, and it's the Other World at times. I can't tell you what that world is called, it depends on what track you're listening to." - Ben Ohmart / @NZone Magazine http://www.atnzone.com

Diode Melody is something of a step back in time. Half of the guitar/piano duo, Reverie, Chris Lonsberry has taken a side-road from his usually acoustic path to explore the possibilities of vintage synthesizers. Warm and melodic, this collection of pieces conveys a variety of moods and messages. The CD opens with a rather majestic rhythm which ushers in the melodic overlays. It is fascinating to hear how Chris has mixed ‘90’s sensibilities with instruments from 15-20 years ago. The CD is nostalgic in some ways, but the musical motifs are current. My favorite track is "The New World" - an irresistible rocker that caused the father of one of my students to comment "I didn’t think piano teachers were supposed to listen to music like that - OR crank up the volume!" He then introduced me to his new $6000 stereo system! But I digress. "Open Terrain" is another up-tempo, rhythm-infused fun-fest that I really like - it must have been a real blast to put together! Other pieces are somewhat more ambient, such as "Climbing Mountains", which is dark and less-melodic, but extremely effective. "Streams" also has a dark feel in contrast to the light and gentle "Rainfall". Many of these pieces would be very compelling in soundtracks - an area Chris hopes to explore. A very enjoyable exploration of classic synthesizers in a "today" setting... - Kathy Parsons / Wind and Wire Magazine
