Album Notes

Pittsburgh trio Lorelei formed in the Fall of 2000 after Dan Barone, Thad Kellstadt, and Susannah Mira met by chance in the city's summer hills. Naming themselves after a deadly siren, however, was no accident. From inception, Lorelei allied for a pop-assault against guitars of mythic proportion with nothing more than two sets of bass strings and some old silver drums.

Initially united to score music for the performance art group Sarrogit, the trio quickly began making songs beyond what they were commissioned to compose for living sculpture installations. Fusing their love of punk with a healthy dose of disdain for any movement preceded by the word "post," the Lorelei sound exploded when they realized someone would have to save Rock from its own disrepute.

Lorelei's untraditional double bass line-up combines hectic drumming with strings that ring off each other at every turn. Thick with distortion from each end of the sonic spectrum, the music remains equal parts rhythm and melody, a compelling interplay between all three elements involved - drums, vocals, and bass.

Sharing their self-released EP with Slim Moon won Lorelei a spot on the newly released double disc Kill Rock Stars compilation, "Fields and Streams." In addition, they have just finished recording their debut full-length release entitled, "Our Minds Have Been Electrified." Throughout its ten tracks the album traverses moods, unified by an overarching minimalist ethic. The tracks range from intricate surges such as "As Long As It's Pink," to straight rock like "Joan Jett," to apocalyptic epics of shattered nerves as evidenced by "Sirens" and "The Switch." This album is the sound of pop gone wonderfully wrong.
