Album Notes

The scoop on Lori

I never really thought I would be working on my third CD. This has all been sort of an evolutionary process. I started out as a dancer, really. My mother began taking me to dance when I was seven. I was actually pretty good, and later in life when I tried out for my high school musical, I was told that I should be "dance captain." I had no intention of being dance captain, so I went back to trying a little harder at honing my skills as a singer. I guess musicals just weren't my thing - but at that point I was already singing in basement bands with my 15 year old buddies - screaming out "Smoke on the Water." So scary. After high school, I left the cushy suburbs of Detroit and headed to Chicago to become a small fish in a very big pond.

My first Chicago band was called "The Confused," and that we were. The guitar player wrote all of the material, and in the process I started picking up on how to write my own lyrics. It was during those very bohemian times I wrote "Pyramids of Passion," and one of my favorites "And I Want You," which I thought deserved reworking, and has made it on to my latest CD. After several years of doing the starving artist thing, trying to get through school (Columbia College - vocal performance major - ), I decided I'd had enough, and headed back to Detroit to regroup. Once there, I had the itch to play, and quickly connected with guitarist Jake Smith. We formed the Kathryn Fixx Band, and started playing clubs around Detroit.

A few months later another band across town lost their singer, booted their guitarist, and Jake and I joined Park the Karma. We released a CD, had a great following, toured around the Mid West raising hell, did a video, bunches of radio interviews, and had a whole bunch of fun in the process. Then it came time to do CD number two.......things got really weird, and Park the Karma came to an abrupt halt. Around that same time, I hooked up with Chad Johnston and Kim Cerne. With Chad on guitar, and Kim on bass we formed Cartoon Life, found drummer Al Canning, started writing, and CD number two was born.

After a few years with Cartoon Life (which later became Liquid), I was burnt out, and decided I needed to get back to the place I love the most-----Chicago. Once here, I surfed around for musicians sort of off and on. I never found anyone who I connected with musically, so I decided to give it up. After some years of not singing at all, I was asked by a friend to sing the National Anthem at Jacob's Field. I had forgotten what I was missing.......I dusted off the microphone, and decided to record again - no mater what. So going back to my musical roots, I decided to commute home to Detroit to record.

I have to thank Paul Randolph for connecting, or in some cases RE-connecting me with some of the best players who really made this thing happen. I had some lyrics and melodies swimming around in my head, and these guys pasted it all together, and made it all sound great. It has been almost a year since I started recording---- a whole bunch of driving, lots of caffeine, and me-- picking up guitar as a way to try and convey my ideas. It was all worth it to me. This is by far the best thing I have ever done, and I can't wait to get out there and share my music with everyone.

Different approach for this CD
author: Brian Walters
The lyrics are thoughtful and emotional. The music itself is very hooky and cool to listen to. A whole lot different for a "chick singer/songwriter".
