Mike Cherry and Chris Louvieris are Anglo Cypriot musicians who live & work in Limassol, Cyprus. This, their eponymous first album, has been inspired by ancient Hopi Indian folklore. The Hopi believe we are ALL “The Lost White Brother”. The white man's pursuit of material gain has caused him to forget that everything in our world - this universe, let alone this planet - requires BALANCE. The path we have chosen to pursue thus far has caused imbalance. The Hopi were forced to develop their land and lives according to the dictates of a new ruler, or else be treated as criminals and punished. They were not to resist; they were to wait for the person who would deliver them. This unseen body was the universal lost white brother, Pahana, who would one day return to them the missing corner piece of the tablet, deliver them from their persecutors, and work out with them a new and meaningful brotherhood of man.
The Hopi symbol consists of an outer circle - the world - which contains a cosmic cross indicating north, south, east & west. The inner circles represent the four nations who were supposed to come together at the centre to provide balance.
Mike Cherry stumbled upon this piece of Indian mythology some fifteen years ago and, like Pahana, has been hiding amongst the stars until the opportunity arose to build a musical concept around it. His encounter with Chris Louvieris has provided just that opportunity. Balance is more essential to the survival of the planet than it has ever been. No-one understands that better than gifted musicians, whose very art begins and ends with balance. Here, in a fusion of haunting melodies and beautiful guitars, expressed in a myriad of different musical styles, lies the true spirit of Pahana. Here is repentance... on a journey which transcends accepted musical formats and at times suspends listening belief. This is music without words which conveys more than words can say.
