notes
The landscape of Barnacles of Joy, Vanessa's sophomore release, evokes feelings of bittersweet longing mixed with long-awaited contentment. In talking about the album Vanessa says, "The world of these songs is about standing very still and almost holding your breath - waiting and watching to see what's going to creep out at you and whether it will be good or bad. It's like blending into the bark of tree, or stepping back into a dark alley as the dervish blows by, as mystery and danger swirl about, both internally and on the outside."
"Barnacles" was produced by composer, re-recording mixer, Kent Sparling, and features percussion by Tobias Hawkins
(Counting Crows, Laundry), acoustic bass by Ron Crotty (Dave Brubeck Trio), and violin by Adrian West. Unusual acoustic sounds like paper bags and tea tins add grit, while ukulele and melodica create haunting melodic texture. "Barnacles" was recorded in the living room and most generously mixed at Skywalker Sound, where every once in a while you could feel the rumble of Star Wars explosions from the next room.
