Album Notes

on Nick Luca:

Bandleader Nick Luca has been a fixture of the Tucson music scene for over a decade. An East Coast native, Nick Luca graduated with a BA with Honors in Music from Clark University in Worchester, Massachusetts. After relocating to Arizona in the early 90s, he continued his education at the University of Arizona, eventually earning a Masters Degree in Composition. As a musician and engineer at Wavelab Studio in Tucson, Nick met Howe Gelb, leader of indie rock cult-fave Giant Sand. The open experimentation of Giant Sand and offshoots Friends of Dean Martinez and Calexico opened Nick up to the ethereal sounds of the Southwest. Soon Nick was recording with Howe, Joey Burns and John Convertino on a variety of albums with artists including M Ward, Calexico, Iron & Wine, Neko Case, Evan Dando, Giant Sand, Richard Buckner, Steve Wynn and many more.

Now, in 2006, LUCA releases their most triumphant release to date, Sick Of Love. Undeniable, catchy and most importantly, chock full of great songs, Sick Of Love is necessary.

Past ink on Luca and the band:

“with a sound that one critic described as a gene splice of Elliott Smith and Curtis Mayfield, Luca came to the attention of [John] Doe via mutual friend Neko Case. All of a sudden, Luca finds himself on a frantic one-month tour with nary a day off.” Nuvo News, Indianapolis

Artistic in that Velvet Underground kind of way, intelligent and interesting, The Nick Luca Trio is a pleasant surprise for anyone seeking out something mellow but not sleep-inducing.” Aquarian Weekly
