notes
In the Spring of 2003 Ludo performed their lyrically-driven, harmony-based, power-pop rock 'n roll at upwards of 70 shows in over 30 cities across the country. Armed only with a van, 2 ferrets and a DIY 3-song demo, the band played to audiences in venues ranging from auditoriums to coffeehouses, abiding by only one rule - play every night!
With fans of the live show hot on their trail the band decided it was time to record. Ludo entered the studio that summer determined to create a take-home version of the exciting sound. They enlisted producer Jim Callahan from their hometown of St. Louis and began work on their first full-length effort with the same wreckless perfectionism that marks all that Ludo does. The self-titled album is also the first release of St. Louis-based independent label Redbird Records and captures the energy and aptitude that is Ludo.

Ludo Rocks!
author: Greg WoodruffI first heard Ludo from my girlfriend. Not actually this album, but their newest release Broken Bride (which, by the way, is an ABSOLUTE MASTERPIECE). I actually heard this album for the first time on my way to see them live at the Pageant in their hometown St. Louis. I had the pleasure to meet every member of the band and they are all the nicest, most down to earth guys i've ever met. This album is start-to-finish one of the best albums I've ever heard (second to Broken Bride), and Ludo is quickly becoming one of my favorite new bands. They won't be playing small venues for long, so if you have a chance to see them, DO IT SOON!!! Because before you know it they are going to be HUGE!!!!!!! Thank you Andrew, Tim, Tim, Marshall, & Matt for 'setting the standard' when it comes to great new music. Proud to be a fan!!! Oh, and my fave songs? Roxy, Hum Along, Girls on Trampolines, Good Will Hunting By Myself, Saturday Night Thunderbolt, Hello My Name is your TV, Laundry Girl, Ode to Kevin Arnold, Summertime, Sara's Song & Air-Conditioned Love. Oh Wait thats all of them, isn't it????? Yesss!!!!! LUDO ROCKS!!!!!!!!

I am happy to report that I got my sister who is into hard core rock to give you guys a chance and she even asked to borrow the CD the other day. Your tunes are very catchy and easy to sing along with. I have a feeling that your fans feel like they can relate to the silly little anecdotes that are contained in your songs. Keep rockin'! I hope you have many great CDs to come, and I can't wait to see you again when you come back to Madison.

Ludo Rocks the Cazbah
author: BrianThis cd is a hilarious and brilliant compilation of well written and performed songs. The only thing better than the songs on this cd is hearing them live. Good Will Hunting By Myself is a classic live performance, you can almost feel the bitterness. This cd rocks; there's no doubt about that.
LUDO GUARENTEE FRESH, EXCITING MUSIC WITH A DOZEN SMILES ON DEBUT DISC
author: Jeremy HanichakThe first thing I did when I put this album on for the first time was smile. From the opening lyrics of THUNDERBOLT to the last distorted chord in GIRLS ON TRAMPOLINES, LUDO hold the listener's attention with a feel good, uplifting, and promising debut. As a person that owns several hundred albums by now, I can honestly judge the playability on this disc. There is not one song here that loses that initial spark of a group of guys doing what they love most. You can hear the fun they have as they rip through such particularly memorable tracks as HUM ALONG, ODE TO KEVIN ARNOLD, and HELLO MY NAME IS YOUR TV. The stories within each song kick ass standing alone, but then are reflected equally as effective by the music. With Lines like "Singing nonsense songs in 12 bars to the jaguars", "I feel like Elliot when ET drank the beer" "milkshakes melt, people change" or "You found me all alone, I found myself a blarney stone", the audience is able to follow the story, relate, and have fun all at once. One things in particular that REALLY impressed me is that, I am not usually a big fan of this type of music, but I truly enjoyed it again and again because of the influences that each member of the group carry into the music. It has a little punk mood, with a rock edge, some comedy, crazy guitar solos, kick ass moog synth, bass to guide the groove of the beat, and a drummer that brings it all to headbang status. I have showed this album to literally over 20 people just since I've had it for a week or two. There is not a one that didn't come back to me YELLING at me how CRAZY GOOD it is and how they love it, LOL including even my 50 year old parents and 11 year old sister. You just have to check it out, seriously, you'll see for yourself, they're about the music and know how to connect it to their audience. LUDO capture something rare these days: an album that is enjoyable from start to finish, with live performances to match it up. Check out such other stand out tracks as Good Will Hunting By Myself about getting over a break up, Laudry Girl about a laudramat romance, and Girls on Trampolines ='s one party I want to be at. If anything else you're guarenteed a SMILE. L.T.D. -Jeremy Hanichak

Ludo Prepares to Rock!
author: The Badger HeraldI can't know for sure, but I'm close to positive that I could tell you whether you will or will not like Ludo without even meeting you. If you have a sense of humor, I'm fairly confident you will enjoy the rollicking lyrics lead singer Andrew Volpe belts out in songs with titles like "Girls On Trampolines." On the other hand, if you're one of the humorless fiends I see wandering in and out of the Law Library sporting the gravest expression you can muster, you might find the band a bit too unruly for your taste. If you had a childhood, there's a good chance that "Ode to Kevin Arnold" will remind you of all of your fondest "Wonder Years" memories. On the other hand, if you're one of those people who was born at age 40, thought "The Wonder Years" was cheesy 10 years before any of the rest of us realized it and hated movies like "Labyrinth" (the David Bowie classic from which the band's name was taken), you may find the band a bit too immature for your taste. If you think that a good time is a good time, I'm pretty sure that you'll have exactly that if you come see the St. Louis-born quintet rock Union South this Saturday night. On the other hand, if you're one of those people who think that drunkenness is a "social construction," that class should never, ever meet outside, that Weezer's blue album could never be as worthwhile as Beethoven's Fifth Symphony and that "Girls on Trampolines" isn't the best song title you've ever heard of, don't even bother showing up. Ludo is simply a breath of Alpine Valley fresh air in a Nuevo-punk rock scene that often seems far too focused on being cool and punkish and not focused nearly enough on writing good music. Volpe, lead guitarist Tim Ferrell, keyboardist Tim Convy, bassist Marshall Fanciullo and drummer Matt Palermo collectively manage to make pop songs rock. Touring for the past year, Ludo has made a name for itself everywhere from Midwestern college towns to the Big Apple (where it recently played with The Big Wu) based on Volpe's clever lyrical style and storytelling ability. The band tells stories about everything from love lost to depression to high-school parties and manages to bring Eddie Murphy-sized grins to its appreciative audience in the process. Ludo's self-titled debut album sports 11 tracks. The album is available online at the band's website www.ludorock.com, or you can get it at the show this Saturday. It's an admirably solid first effort, with no noticeable filler tracks and at least five songs that will have you humming to yourself for weeks. The band's sound is something of a mixture. In a style similar to Ben Folds or Weezer's Rivers Cuomo, Volpe jam-packs his lyrics into verses. The guitar sound, on the other hand, has more similarity to a power-punk band like Blink 182. The band then mixes in a bit of Beach Boy-fashion '50s-pop appreciation and a sense of humor that can only be described as one-of-a-kind. The combination is irresistible and can make you actually bang your head, tap your foot and laugh hysterically all at the same time. Ludo often will get grouped in with so many pop-punk contemporaries because of the band's ability and desire to blow audiences away with guitars. But such an impression is misleading. "If you're in a rock band with clever lyrics that make people laugh, people want to throw you in with Blink 182 or Good Charlotte," Ferrell explained. "What we play is rock. There's nothing really punk about it." The band definitely does have much more to offer through Volpe's lyric-writing talent than other current bands in its genre. In the song "Roxy," Volpe tells the tale of a European adventure involving a French girl he knows only by the name on her shirt. "Oh Roxy, don't you love me? / Is it because I'm American?" he sings. On "Hum Along," probably the album's strongest track, Volpe tells of his genuine love for a girl he's never talked to. He goes on to make up scenarios from which he would rescue her. "Maybe you'd be kidnapped by pirates / who would take you to their hideout / as pirates often do." Many songs, like the Beach Boys-esque "Summertime" and the '50s-influenced "Laundry Girl" are in fact drenched in oldies with their three-part harmonies and delicate phrasings. But Tim Ferrell's driving guitar, along with a splash of synthesizer, gives the songs an updated, unique sound. You wouldn't think that heavy-metal guitars and '50s-influenced pop songs could appear on the same record, much less the same song, but throughout the album it's the seamless marriage of these two characteristics that sets Ludo apart from its peers. The metal/oldies relationship is most evident on "Sara's Song," which starts out sounding like an Everly Brothers ballad and ends in typical rock desperation with the full band begging poor "Sara" to stay. The album itself is wonderful, but seeing Ludo play live Saturday night, opening for Longwave is the only way to get a real taste of Volpe and company. "We've always loved coming up to Madison, and we really can't wait to play with Longwave," says Palermo. Come see Ludo this Saturday night. You'll be in for a treat. by Jake Leonard, ArtsEtc. Ludo's Debut Has it All
author: Mind Set Magazine - University of Notre DameLudo has put together an album as good as Ultimate Fakebook’s This Will Be Laughing Week, except with more diversity; an album as good as Weezer’s Maladroit, except with better lyrics; and an album as funny as Blink 182’s Take Off Your Pants and Jacket, except funnier. With their debut, self-titled record, this 5-piece band from St. Louis has done what other pop punk bands have tried to do for years. The album takes off immediately with “Saturday Night Thunderbolt,” a song with verses that remind me of Mest, but with better melody changes and surprisingly remarkable lead vocals by Andrew Volpe. “Hum Along” has some of the best lyrics on the album. Members of the band say this is one of their favorite songs to perform. Matt Palermo’s talent really shows off in this song, and the muted guitars of Volpe and Tim Ferrell are very effective throughout the track. Volpe says, “the problem with music today is that the lyrics are always so predictable. No one ever writes songs with decent storylines anymore.” This song tells a great love story, taking unpredictable twists of what a man would do in ridiculous situations, like if his girl were “kidnapped by pirates” and the lengths he would go to rescue her. The song continues into an instrumental interlude and then a fast-paced bridge with a suddenly soft ending. The band’s diversity comes out in the song “Summertime,” written by guitarist Tim Ferrell. Its Pacific influences, combined with Palermo’s cymbals and exciting drum rolls into the loud chorus reminds me of Weezer’s “Death and Destruction” with more power, depth, and much stronger lyric writing. “Good Will Hunting by Myself” might be the most exciting track on the album. An opening with instrumental and keyboard effects is followed by the best story on the album. The song is about a man who used to watch Good Will Hunting with his girlfriend. But then she dumped him on his birthday, and now he has to watch Good Will Hunting by himself. The wah-wah effects on the guitar solo are really effective when followed by a slow, Lucky Boys Confusion-esque riff. The song takes a hilarious turn, however, involving a minute-long tirade about hatred for the ex-girlfriend and concluding when the man moves on. “Air Conditioned Love,” another of the band’s favorites, has strong verses with a good neo-punk chorus. The highlight of the track is the guitar solo at its conclusion. Ferrell’s effects are like Tom Morello playing around with his guitar (back when he was good, in RATM). At the very end, the keyboard and guitar effects of destruction are like the conclusion of a Trail of Dead song. The album concludes with a great track about youth, about not being old enough to go to drinking parties. The song, “Girls on Trampolines,” is traditional mid-90s punk rock style: fast and heavy. With a loud and memorable finish, this song is a great conclusion to a great album. The album may be hard to find now, but you can listen to some of the tracks off of the band’s website (www.ludorock.com) and order the CD from there as well. by: Joe Lattal
