Album Notes

Luis Angulo´s diverse musical influences are portrayed here through his experimental loop improvisations.Using guitar synths, effect proccessors and real time looping devices,he is able to paint a broad musical canvas taking you to an unexpected musical journey.
This first release "Primeros Ciclos" is a combination of sonic experimentation and live improvisation all done with an electric guitar.
The first track "comienzo" is a drone followed by a celtic like reed flute guitar synthesizer solo syncronized to a preprogramed drum box 6/8 african rhythm.
The following track "Nataraja dance" is a hypnotic backward guitar loop backed by an indian tabla pattern synced again to a dance groove, sounding like a dancing boa snake.
The dreamy live track "Wasserfall" is a guitar piece with simple layers of canon notes accompanied with a dreamy melody.
"Cajita de musica" is an improvised evolving composition recorded live in Italy. This piece specially demonstrates what a single guitar can do layering synthesizers and guitar sounds put into a repeating loop.Listening to pieces like this it is hard to tell that there is only one person with one guitar creating such a wall of sound.
For an audience a Live Looping concert can be an increadibly inspiring experience because you are not presented with a "finished piece of music",as by the traditional concert form of playing back pre-written music.A direct quotation from the live looping community explains it further:"At a live looping show you are able to follow in detail how each musician is improvising and composing spontaneously and adding his parts to the music - note for note, loop for loop. It's like an instantly evolving ritual of magic that never repeats itself"...

Primeros Ciclos
author: Scott Duncan
First learned of this artist, by way of a looper's site. Of interest to me immediately, on writing Luis, I rec'd a genuinely warm and interesting follow up reply. He's been at this for some time and this, his 2nd CD, is varied and dynamic. It includes both studio & live recordings of his looping and improv guitar and processing efforts. "Unidos" with near-bagpipe affect & multi drum tempos, gives way to "Nataraja Dance" w/ a great groove/loop beat & spatial sonics. "Wasserfall" is more pastoral, and a live mix that is melodic and gently guitar driven but ends up in electronica by it's conclusion. Guitar-synth "brass" is the star of "Cajita de Muisca" (also live mix) that works from oddly familiar piano tones & riffs (near King Crimson/devil's triangle sound) and morphs to recognizable guitar chops. "Monos" brings a montage of organic tropical sounds, drum beats, birdsong, & a few tribal words ( tribal being relative ). "The Returning" may be my favorite, as it includes Luis' voice, (and Jimi's) in a bluesy, jazzy way with wah-wah, loops and another fine mix of drums, guitars & sounds. Finally, "Mezcal Blues" gives the listener a moody pace that slowly fills w/ accordian, rounded guitar tones, claves and a late night atmosphere again accented by swelling cornet/brass guit-synth playing that is soulful and moving. It tells a story with out need for a narrator. This entire CD put a spell on me. Bravo Luis Angulo.
