The Pleasure of Discovery

The vibe of this record reminds me of early Van, back in the Street Choir days. It has a really warm feel, with lovely, simple horn arrangements, intimate vocals, and a solid band that sounds like they're having a great time playing the music. Luke doesn't beat listeners over the head with anything; instead, he allows us the pleasure of discovering him.

Among music reviewers, there is a recurring discussion about what makes one artist stand out from another. It’s not uncommon to hear perplexity even amongst those with decades of experience, who refer to a kind of spirit or magic found in those artists that is at best, indescribable and elusive. What reviewers will agree upon, however, is that the “special something” is a quality which you feel more than hear. One CD Baby theory about this mysterious musical power is that it is born when an artist is completely committed to his music, completely committed to an idea or concept and sees it through to its fullest potential, meaning every single word, pouring himself into every note and every chord progression whether it be the oldest one in the book or not. All of this comes to mind when exploring the music of Luke Brindley. Though his style isn’t blaringly unique, his genre isn’t style-busting, his song structures aren’t unheard of, the drive and spirit behind his music contain that unidentifiable charm. Tapping into some of the finest musicians in the DC area, his self-titled album embraces qualities of roots rock, classic singer/songwriter folk, Americana and bits of folk blues. Calling to mind artists ranging from Van Morrison to Neil Young to contemporary voices on the scene like Jason White, Brindley’s winning songs can credit their success to his consistently grounded, earthy, honest and humble writing.
