Luke Stone Biography

Multi-instrumentalist and composer Luke Stone has been an active member of the Kansas City/Lawrence music scene for over 9 years. Luke's inherent love for music started with a musical family -- his grandfather attended Juilliard, his grandmother is a professional pianist, and his mother sings with both the Kansas City Lyric Opera and Kansas City Chorale. At age 13, he started playing his mom's guitar, and shortly after began playing drum set, influenced by his peers and bands such as Mahavishnu Orchestra, Weather Report, Frank Zappa, Pink Floyd, Phish, Herbie Hancock, Jimi Hendrix and many more. In school, Luke studied drum set with Doug Auwarter and played percussion with the marching, symphonic, and jazz bands and later earned a college music scholarship in St. Joseph Missouri.
In 1998, eager to put his academic studies into use, Luke moved to Lawrence Kansas to pursue music. Collaborating with local musicians, he founded the Stoneband, which has since found a receptive audience and embarked on small regional tours. With Stoneband, Luke has shared the stage with many prominent musicians, including Widespread Panic, Jazz Mandolin Project, Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey, Robert Walter's 20th Congress, Schleigho and others.
In addition to performing, Luke is also a competent recording engineer. Since 2003, he has self-produced and engineered two solo CD’s of all original compositions which are available via his website. The jazz-funk-fusion sound of both CD’s feature Luke playing all of the instruments with the exception of saxophone, and some keyboard and guitar leads.
