The self-titled first release of Portland project Luminous Things is a narrative psychological journey—expansive, yet stark at times, a meditation on broken relationships and modern life. Melodic and stylistically diverse (cinematic ’60s psych-pop, electro-folk ballads, Clash-inspired angularity and Pink Floyd-worthy epics all have their day), the ten tracks here showcase singer/songwriter John Kwon’s evocative short-story narratives. Each is rooted in poignant, deeply personal lyrics capturing the fleeting moments that continue to resonate long after they’ve passed.
Luminous Things began as a recording project while Kwon was on hiatus from his previous band, Durango Park. Self-produced and recorded over two years in his home studio, the ten tracks on the record evolved and were brought to life with help from talented players in Kwon’s musical sphere. Katie Griesar (Durango Park) played treated guitar, samples, and sang backing vocals. Ned Folkerth (Pine Top Seven, Five Style, Caleb Klauder) lent drums and percussion. And Dave Depper (Norfolk & Western, Loch Lomond) and Nathan Junior (Mike Coykendall, M Ward) also contributed tracks.
Mixed by Jeff Saltzman and Jeremy Sherer and mastered by Carl Saff, the album will be self-released on tiny beat records in March 2009. The live Luminous Things lineup features John Kwon, Katie Griesar, Ned Folkerth, and Dave Lovato.
