notes
One listen to LuvJones will demonstrate that the time for a group like theirs in contemporary R&B is now. They draw their inspirations from a classic soul lineage stretching from Curtis Mayfield, Stevie Wonder, Teena Marie, Roberta Flack, and Donny Hathaway through to India.Arie, Bob Marley, and Amel Larrieux. Many believe the band's potential to someday warrant a mention on that list is very real. LuvJones seeks to pay homage to the inimitable legends while making their own mark.
The band's repertoire demonstrates a style at once familiar and original. Their songs tell stories with far-reaching honesty. LuvJones successfully adds their signature to cover songs, too - breathing new life into classic hits. All the while they maintain consistency. Their integration of Hip Hop, Jazz, Reggae, and World music creates aural ambience. LuvJones is an experience.
Individually, the members own extraordinary talents. Together, LuvJones is airtight. On stage, audiences notice a unique presence. This band is at once diverse and unified, polished and welcoming.
As a performer, one is hard-pressed to find flaw in SHEA ROSE. A charismatic vocal find, Shea is an attractive, down-to-earth individual with uncommon gifts of expression. When she performs, audiences pay attention.
NATHAN SABANAYAGAM'S eloquent drumming flair has made him an in-demand live/session drummer with many Reggae superstars in Chicago. JAMES AUBURN glides over the keys with seemingly effortless finesse, and Saxophonist NAT LOVE plays butter-smooth lines and solos deftly.
LuvJones, no stranger to the New England club circuit, makes headway. They recently played New York's legendary The Bitter End and Coda, opened for acclaimed R&B vocalist Amel Larrieux at Boston's Big Easy Bar, and headlined a 9-11 benefit concert at House of Blues in Cambridge, MA. They are scheduled to perform at the birthday party for the Lieutenant Governor of Massachusetts, and continue their diligent work on a full-length album.
REVIEWS:
"Funky, jazz-type background with hip-hop style vocals, blended perfectly with a second, more R&B-ish vocalist...I love it! So diversified (is that a word? - well it is now...)...so creative...so soulful! These guys are also such individuals, aside from their respected instruments, they come from different walks of life. It seems as though their worlds intertwined for the greater good of creating beautiful, harmonious sounds. This is most definitely one of the best things I have heard all year.... take the best iced coffee you have *ever* tasted (my personal favorite is French Vanilla), multiply that by 1,000 and you have come close to the euphoric feeling they create! **** (Four stars baybe!)"
- Samantha, Boston Soundcheck Magazine
"What we have here is some very slick and very classy hip-hop-infused street jazz. They use the traditional piano, bass and drum trio as their foundation and add in smooth vocals, funk-style guitar and a little MC-rhyme action. The resulting jam is very urban and hip as well as smooth and mellow - as drums dish out a solid 4/4 groove, piano rings in the seventh chords and the bass player is free to travel all over the fingerboard... definitely worth checking out."
- Luke Pyles, The Northeast Performer
"...Bordering on funky jazz compositions, the band takes it one step further by adding cool-headed, crystal clear vocals that takes the songs to a higher level. Even when the band shifts into rap, they maintain a universal sound that can be enjoyed by more than just your gangsta types. This is the sound of the civilized city."
- Douglas Sloan, Metronome Magazine, November 2000
"This suburban Boston band with a fresh new sound has just exploded onto the Boston music scene, incorporating jazz, rock, funk, and hip-hop. They've established a fairly wide fan base for a band that's only played a hand full of venues to date. If you're not up dancing when these guys are done performing, then you'd better check your pulse!"
- Bread & Roses Labor Day Heritage Festival
"This multi-talented, multi-racial, and multi-styled band finds a way to serve up equal parts of rock, jazz, blues, funk, pop, and R&B. The sound is smooth and natural. Each member has very diverse influences and brings together several vocal styles. The sextet features vocals, drums, bass, and keyboards to create their unique sound."
- The House of Blues, Cambridge, MA
"There are not many bands that will attract such a wide variety of people from all ages and interests. There was singing, rapping, powerful beats, and an energy which conveyed the band's passion for music and performing. Excuse us for being vague but it is very difficult to describe this bands style and sound with words. It is a feeling, a rhythm, a flow. It is an experience."
