notes

San Francisco's Luxxury declare the dance/rock wars over with the release of their long-awaited full length debut, "Rock and Roll (is Evil)." The 12 song album employs 1980's influenced electro beats, synths, heroic guitars and sardonic lyrics to chronicle the rise and fall of legendary 70’s Sunset Strip groupie Sable Starr.

Luxxury began in 2002 when Baron von Luxxury, inspired by LCD Soundsystem's call to arms "Losing my Edge", sold his guitar and bought a synthesizer. He then rerecorded his home-demo songs as 80's styled electro-pop, with disco beats and shimmering Giorgio Moroder-y synth replacing the guitar parts. While tongue-in-cheek at first, the resulting sonic makeover was undeniably infectious, and a new (old) future-retro sound was born.

That first batch of bedroom demos was picked up by Chicago's Omega Point Records and had three sellout pressings as "The Drunk EP." Now, after three years comes Luxxury's full length debut. "Rock and Roll (is Evil)" was recorded and mixed in Berlin, Los Angeles, Brooklyn and San Francisco by resident singer/producer/tyrant von Luxxury. It features cover art by internationally renowned artist Jeremy Blake, who also created Beck’s “Sea Change” cover, the art in Paul Thomas Anderson's "Punch Drunk Love" and was the subject of a recent exhibition at the SF MOMA.

"Rock and Roll (is Evil)" kicks off with "Drunk" (as heard on Live 105, XFM and Virgin Radio London). “Dirty Girls Need Love Too” mixes two parts indie dance-rock a la The Faint with the future/retro glam of Ladytron and a splash of, dare we say, Frankie Goes to Hollywood. And the electro-rock hits keep coming, from radio favorites "Something Going On" (a cover of the classic by ABBA' s Frida) and "Sable Starr" (as heard on KROQ) to the newest single "Sweet and Vicious" the album evokes equal bits of New Order, The Cars and Daft Punk.

Live, Luxxury is a unique hybrid of dance band and rock act, tight and rocking yet dangerously danceable. On their recent UK tour and several west coast tours Luxxury have opened for bands such as The Lovemakers, Scissors for Lefty, White Rose Movement, Scanners and 80's legends ABC, Live, von Luxxury plays guitar and sings, while Sha and Rico provide bass and drums respectively, while the synth and sequencing machines take care of themselves because they are terribly smart.

Luxxury brings todays kids and tomorrow's adults the futuristic sounds of yesterday, but sexier, and properly groomed.

Praise for Luxxury's "Rock and Roll (is Evil)":

“Unbelievably addictive …14 stunning electronica anthems of pure balls out disco fury… STUDIO 54 never had music this good… a dazzling album.”
- Subba Cultcha, London.

“This mash-up of glam rock, disco and synth-pop, played at a thumping pace, comes on like a slightly nastier, sleazier Scissor Sisters fronted by Heaven 17's Glenn Gregory, and we rather like that in a band!”
- New Noise, London.

Praise for Luxxury's "Drunk EP":

"Four and a half stars. One of the finds of the year. "

  • Think Scissor Sisters and think much further back to Soft Cell...Four and a half

The music itself is a mix of a slightly sleazier Scissor Sisters (especially after their second album where they've toned it down), the Killers and the better elements of Electric Six. The album kicks off with the really quite fantastic Drunk, which is quite frankly my favourite track here, and then doesn’t let up. As with the Alphabet Girls debut album, some of the tracks have appeared else-where but some at least have been re-worked (don’t know about all of them as I haven’t heard all of them before). What I can say without doubt is that anyone who likes a bit of guitar mixed up with their synths will almost certainly like this, especially anyone who thinks that music sounds that bit richer with an element of sleaze added. Think Scissor Sisters and think much further back to Soft Cell…Four and a half stars!

The first thing you notice on the very first track on this Album is how unbelievably addictive the bloody thing is going to be for the next 13 tracks. Collectively this album is 14 stunning electronica anthems of pure balls out disco fury, with blips, beeps, thumping bass and great vocals throughout. Samples chime in and get the mood going, there are processed beats, and that all encompassing eighties vox style akin to early Numan and Eurythmics stuff. It’s a pretty dazzling album. It gets better and better the louder you turn the volume dial, and sooner or later, you are calling your friends around for a full on disco biscuit revival, with the tunes being pumped at neighbourhood bothering levels, just so you can get your rocks off like its fucking 1975 all over again… STUDIO 54 never had music this good… and if it did, it would still be going with thousands of kids pumping through the door night in, night out, for a go on the dancefloor to songs like “DIRTY GIRLS (need love too)” and THE ONE YOU ADORE… If you have ever been a closet disco fan, or like the fats, adrenaline paced levels of beats that won’t give up once they get your attention, you could do a lot worse than go and get this album as soon as it comes out… It’ll be in dance, under “L”, and it will be screaming at you… very much getting as much attention as it can. It’s brilliant. Bring back the flares, the roller-boots, tassles on sleeves, and gold leaf jumpsuits.. Come in Emo, your time is up… Disco is fucking back baby. By AJ Chamberlain
