Album Notes

NOTE FROM THE TEACHER (May 2007):

\"This year’s exercise in creativity was to take a simple musical idea using a short sequence of notes or a chosen rhythm pattern (“motif, motto or motive”) Then, we discovered what could happen if we applied our theory lessons to it. Each student came up with their own, and their projects were recorded by their own hands. Some pieces worked well as duets with me, some have fun sound effects and simple orchestrations, and others stand strong as piano solos. Even if their efforts produced just 5 notes and a good idea, then it got an A+. (everyone got an A+) We hope that you enjoy our very first group effort in creative writing, and in recording. We really enjoyed making it for you. \"
Sincerely,
Lynda Lybeck-Robinson

READ ABOUT THE PROJECT and WHERE IT COMES FROM

\"Discovery Channel\'s \'Deadliest Catch\' as done a lot to expose this unique and remote fishing community to people around the world. Lynda Lybeck\'s latest CD project called \"Hearts and Hands : Maiden Voyage\", in partnership with her students, sheds further light on a gentler, artistic side that thrives in the surprising community of Unalaska/Dutch Harbor, Alaska\"
K. Vellum, Seattle Washington

The community of Unalaska/Dutch Harbor is nestled in the Aleutian Island chain off the coast of Alaska. The population of over 4000 is driven economically by their status as the #1 fishing port in the United States. History books cover the community’s significance in WWII, and the indigenous people, the Quawalangin Tribe (Aleut), still seek to maintain a rich and beloved culture here. Getting to this unique community takes a three hour flight from Anchorage, AK. Bringing in visiting artists and performers has been a tradition here for years, supported by the community, individuals, and an active Arts Council.

All songs here are composed by the 31 school-age piano students of Lynda Lybeck-Robinson during the school year 2006-07. They are composed and performed by each student, then recorded as solos, duets, or unique vignettes with sound effects.

All proceeds from the Hearts and Hands series CDs will directly benefit the Hearts and Hands Project. This group is set up to benefit island music students with the funding of visiting performers/educators/composers, as well as to fund a Hearts and Hands recording like this one every year. Our goal is to offer further inspiration for the island piano students and music community for years to come.

REVIEWS

Listen and be pleasantly surprised

First of all, I admit I know Lynda personally. Her objective in this project was not to stun the academics with her students use of complex theory principles, but to give wings to her students own creative expression, sometimes with a team effort as a duet with their teacher. Oh, granted, they use good use of theory relative to their levels of ability! What results here though are really sweet, smile starting and sometimes thought provoking melodies. Lynda quotes "Never underestimate the power of simplicity". This CD is being followed up by,so I hear, Hearts and Hands II. Bravo. You might be surprised to hear that I know a cancer patient who uses this CD to relax her, and a doctor who plays it in his office because his patients actually comment on how much they enjoy it. I've enjoyed it too and look forward to seeing what they've got up their sleeve up there in the Aleutian Islands this year!
