" A FLAWLESS BLEND OF DEEP BLUES ROOTS WITH SOPHISTICATED JAZZ & SWING INFLUENCES."

Lynwood Slim followed the well-trodden path of many of the bluesmen of his generation: early interest in another instrument (in his case, trumpet), before having his head spun around by the sounds of Little Walter, Jimmy Reed, and other Chicago-based blues legends while in his early teens. His long and winding blues road has included lengthy stays in Minneapolis and Chicago, where he soaked up the true blues sounds and established a name for himself as a double threat on both vocals and harmonica.

First hand experience and apprenticeship under veteran blues masters such as multi-instrumentalist Leonard “Baby Doo” Caston and harmonica giant Big Walter Horton served Slim well as he mastered the subtleties of tone and phrasing, and developed his own distinctive voice in the blues.

His mastery of blues harmonica – both the ‘little harp’ and the more difficult chromatic - is second to none, and he’s also one of the finest blues vocalists of his generation. His recording career as a band leader and featured front man spans well over two decades and dozens of releases, and includes more ‘guest appearances’ on the releases of others than can easily be tallied. Couple his many years of performing and recording experience with a life that’s seen more ups and downs and ins and outs than the next three bluesmen of his generation combined, and add in a knack for writing strong and catchy original lyrics, and a deep love of swinging jazz, and you’ve got one of the most complete and appealing bluesmen in the business today: Lynwood Slim.

'Last Call' is pure pleasure. I can't get enough! At home, at the station, in the car...my girl friend is beginning to wonder if I’ll ever take it out of my car.

This set is an undoubted winner from first track to last!

Richard Duran’s debut is subtitled ‘The Mellow Sounds Of Lynwood Slim’ – an apt description for an enthralling set that features covers of songs by Billie Holiday, Duke Ellington and Big Joe Turner/Pete Johnson, whilst also boasting a cast of top-notch musicians that includes Kid Ramos, Kirk Fletcher, Rich Delgrosso, Richard Innes, Ron Dziubla and Carl Sonny Leyland. With musicians of that caliber you would not expect this set to disappoint – and it doesn’t. From the irresistible swing of the opening track, ‘Well Alright, O.K. You Win’, – where Slim’s hip vocals and cool harp are perfectly complemented by Kid Ramos’s master-class in delivering mellow tone and phrasing – to the moody, jazz inflected sophistication of ‘You Never Cried For Me’, where Slim vocalizes like a mellow Jimmy Witherspoon, whilst also contributing some haunting flute – this set is an undoubted winner from first track to last.
