"We walk by faith, not by sight." This scripture (2nd Corinthians 5:7) is a prime example of the spiritual life that Calen Johnson lives. Known in the world of music as Lyrical Preacher and his music-spawning alias Nelac, he is a talented individual that hails from the state of Maryland, with a mission to change and save people's lives and spirits across the world with his music. His expertise includes that of singing, rapping, producing, songwriting and music composing; these talents are being put into good use as he performs in the DC-Metropolitan area and other parts of the United States. He is the owner and CEO of Thief in the Night 152 Productions and Nelac Publishing, two companies created in 2003—with the help of his father and business investor, Camero Johnson—for the sole purpose of creating quality music and presenting it to the world.
It is quite obvious that God had a major plan for Calen since his birth on October 19, 1983, as he listened and sang to songs from albums played in the house, and performed for his parents by singing and dancing. Even his peers at Longfields Elementary School were entertained by his energy as he was an avid fan of Michael Jackson in the late 80's and early 90's.
Calen's musical experience began at the age of eleven, were he first learned how to play the saxophone. He would then continue to hone his skills at Thurgood Marshall Middle School by participating in the concert band, string ensemble—where he learned to play cello—and the youth orchestra of Prince George's County. It was during his tenure at Thurgood that he realized he wanted to sing and rap, writing his first rap song and singing for his father in 1996. Camero Johnson (Calen's father) saw the potential in him and put him in Back to Basics, a spiritual-based summer music camp that focused on developing children's musical talents and teach Biblically based values. Here L.P. developed his talents through voice, piano, and drum lessons; from that point on he used this experience to continue learning about music in class and on his own, experimenting with chords and melodies in an effort to create his own music. He came to grips with what he truly wanted to do as an artist upon attending Largo High School, where he actively participated in the marching, concert, stage and pep bands, even participated in poetry reads at the school.
As he continued developing his voice (in both rapping and singing) and playing abilities thanks to the personal coaching and financial investments of his father, Calen made the decision to rap and sing for the Lord and began writing lyrics with spiritual- and life-based themes and topics. These lyrics would later serve as the foundation for his debut independent project properly titled GOD'S TIME, an audio work of art that showcases his range of talent. Writing and recording all of the songs on the project (with the exception of one in which the lyrics were written by both him and his father), he has put together a gospel album everyone will enjoy, from young children to adults. Calen's musical experience came full circle after graduating high school and entering Morehouse College in Atlanta, Georgia, where he majored in Music with a concentration in composition. GOD'S TIME was completed in 2004 during his tenure at Morehouse and has been making positive noise since then. His music writing and creating greatly increased, enabling him to utilize computer music workstations and expand on his creativity by making over fifty beats during the last half of his college tenure.
Calen graduated from Morehouse in 2005 and is currently working hard to increase the awareness of debut project and his music independently while developing his second solo project. He is an active member of the American Society of Composers, Authors & Publishers (ASCAP), Dynamic Producer, Urban Gospel Alliance, the Gospel Music Association, the Stellar Awards Gospel Music Academy, and the Washington Area Music Association. Until the Lord calls for him to do something else, Calen is guaranteed to bring you music and a message that people NEED to hear, not WANT to hear.
Calen now resides in Douglasville, Georgia, and is currently at work on various new projects including a new full-length album titled 'Journal of a Human being' and a mixtape slated to hit the streets soon.
