Album Notes

Lyric Benson emerged from eight years of dedication to the study of consciousness to create her debut album, Lyric’s Love Light Revolution, an eco-psychedelic transcendental hip pop celebration of her awakening. The daughter of Karla DeVito and Robby Benson, she grew up in the entertainment business. After studying film at New York University, Lyric learned Transcendental Meditation (TM) and cloistered herself with the women of Mother Divine to focus on her work. Ultimately she graduated magna cum laude from Maharishi University of Management, in Fairfield, Iowa, with a degree in Maharishi Vedic Science. When her poetry evolved into ideas for songs, she collaborated with her father, Robby Benson, who wrote the music, and arranged and produced the ten-song album in his studio on Cape Cod. Lyric lives in Los Angeles.

Lyric’s Love Light Revolution is the collaboration of Lyric Benson and Robby Benson, a modern rock orchestration of pop songs exquisitely arranged to tell a story. From track to track, Lyric’s gentle poems (In the Valley of My Soul) evolve into raps and rants (How My Body Trembles), then resolve in harmony (Life is a Revolution). The music moves with her as Robby articulates the power of her experience in guitar solos and electronica, timpani and doumbek, rock ‘n roll, samples, and psychedelia. Play it loud. The layers of sound will draw you into Lyric’s vortex and spin you across the dance floor.

Lyric’s Love Light Revolution is a cosmic journey inward. A girl of the hip-hop generation, she raps soliloquies between verses of pop melodies, alternating hypnotic repetition in Lord Shiva’s Tree with lightness of being in Mother Lady, and good old fashioned fist thumping in Let’s Live Life in Peace. When she goes off the deep end in I’m Never Gonna Let You Go, the guitar follows trailing into insanity. But it’s not all that deep. If Lyric Benson has a bumper sticker it’s My Heart is the Sun, “all my friends think I'm crazy, I'm in peace — they think that I'm lazy, I see clear — they think that I'm hazy, my heart is the sun!”

Lyric’s vocal dynamics and the span of the music across all five genomes — pop/rock, hip-hop/electronica, jazz, world music, and classical — can be traced back to her gene pool. Her mom, legendary singer, Karla DeVito had two solo albums, headlined MTV’s first New Year’s Eve concert, toured the world with Jim Steinman and Meat Loaf as the female lead in the original Bat Out of Hell, and starred as Mabel, in Joe Papp’s Broadway production of Pirates of Penzance, where she met Robby. Actor-writer-director Robby Benson became a member of New York City Musicians Union 802 at the age of 14 and has been the recipient of several RIAA Gold Records for songwriting, most notably We Are Not Alone for John Hughes’ seminal film, The Breakfast Club. Though it may be in her DNA to be a performer, Lyric Benson brings her own talent, energy, and insight to the music in this breakthrough sonic extravaganza.
