notes

Beat Camp Tactics brings all Macgregor's elements to the table. Ranging from soul-jazz to straight hip hop, the songs reflect the band's wide range of influences. Live instrumentation gives the music an organic feel that is lacking in modern hip hop. The rhythm section provides funked out head-nodding beats while the soul-drenched horn lines fill out the sound, showcasing the band's writing ability.

Lead vocalist Wax comes fully-equipped, spitting meticulously crafted lyrics that amaze listeners in their complexity, content, and cleverness. He also amazes audiences by his ability to play complex chord progressions on the guitar while rapping at the same time. Other members of the group occasionally step up to the mic as well. The lyrical content in Beat Camp Tactics is extremely diverse, ranging from battle raps to political commentary to stories of romantic encounters.

MacGregor is:

Wax: guitar, lead vocals
Herbal T: bass, vocals
Chris Frazer: drums
The Eugenic: alto sax, vocals
Mike Gutiérrez: tenor sax
Brian Hint: trumpet, flute

With personalities from soul, acid jazz, and a wide range of influences, James Brown funk meets hip hop in a most grabbing way. One might not normally think "eclectic" could describe hip hop, but this alternative, gourmet group has stirred everything together with a fresh taste and organic, live sound to expand the possibilities of the genre. With diverse lyrical content, from battle raps to stories of romantic encounters, we recommend you feast your ears on this buffet.

    author: Becky

I saw Macgregor in concert while they were touring with 2 Skinnee J's. Even though I was disappointed to hear that the J's were retiring, I was happy to replace them with Macgregor. This is a great all around album. The songs are all pretty catchy, keeping you moving in your seat while driving. The album is a great anti-road rage agent. It helps the listener relax. Anyone who mixes their mashed potatoes, gravy and corn all together will like this CD.

  • Unbelievable flows and rhymes mixed with hypnotic melodies. An 11 on a 1-10 sca
    author: Brendan McNicholas

A fresh, ecclectic crock pot of Funk n' Jazz stew. With a dash of hip hop. A big, tasty, welcome dash! I love it.

  • THE BEST BEAT AROUND- Big Horn Style.. yaaalll
    author: Papa Rich

I have known most of these fine young gents since elementary school and have even jammed with a few of them, those early roots of "MayDay" are still stong in this debut album, all the kicks, riffs, horns and spins are mixed in the beautiful lyrical battle that is MACGREGOR... the most original sound around.

This albulm is the most creative, soulful, funky and energetic work of art I've ever heard. It is completely unique in its style. The songs are well composed with jazzy influences intertwined among sick hip hop beats( made with real instruments by guys who are masters of their craft) no bullshit mtv crap here. this cd is the perfect fusion of jazz rock and rap. the rhymes, the beats, the instramentals come togeather in a way that's not even close to anything i've ever heard. this is the future of music.

Great CD! Very original. Funky horns!

  • hot shit
    author: hip hop junkie

I'm feeling this cd heavily. Kung Fu is the best track due to the battle lyrics and the crazy sax solo. I also like the herbal synapse spanish rap alot, even though I don't understand a word of it. All in all, this is a great CD.
