Songwriting. It's like picking up the end of a piece of string that disappears into a great woods before you and following it without a clue where it's going to take you.
Influences always matter. In my case these would include early Laura Nyro's "Captain for Dark Mornings" and "New York Tendaberry". Ray Davies' "See My Friends" and "Rainy Day in June". Moby Grape's "8:05". David Crosby's "Yvette in English", or Little Feat's "Red Streamliner". Chris Smither's "I Feel The Same". Or the Jefferson Airplane's "Saturday Afternoon" from 'After Bathing at Baxters". Brian Wilson's "Caroline, No". Joni Mitchell's "Blonde in the Bleachers", "Michael From Mountains", and "Trouble Child"
Ultimately, it's all about the song, and the skill and love exercised in creating it. Lyrics and melody. Heat and air.
Songwriters have to write.
