Album Notes

Mad Duran strikes a balance between the true grit of a real musician and the personal domain of having lived what she plays. Like Bird said,"if you don't live it, it won't come out of your horn." Mad by playing it; what is in her ears and heart, is unconscienciously extended the normal boundaries that categorize standard song forms. In the performance aspect of her playing that will reach everyone on a very, very personal level. The delivery of her message in a word in life. This woman has lived music.

The distinguishing features of Madaline Duran style are simple and beautiful. To the blues to standard songs, Mad's most influential component is melody. The prescribed function of the melody is obvious when she plays. She knows what has come before the melody and what will happen next. This creates a form of deep expression in the solos. You can hear this in her playing.

She is a remarkable and profound performer. Her story is the story of adventure. She is an intellect and has the greatest authority and force because, it's personal. It's coming from a person who loves it. Her music offers everything that life has.

This latest CD by Mad & Eddie Duran is a work of art Mad (alto) swings lively with a beautiful sound throughout all the great selection of tunes. Guitarist Eddie solos and swings hard to match Mad's performance. With tremendous support from bassist Ray Drummond and drummer Akira Tana. This CD explodes into musical pebbles of passionate sounds. It's a joy to listen to great music like this. Louie Bellson

Mad Hatter of Wonderland

On a clear day you can hear Mad Duran clear to Timbuktu. She’s awesome, powerful, digs right in and doesn’t let up. She’s the Mad Hatter of Wonderland, taking you for everything you’ve got. Starting below ground with a low Bb and all the way up to the stars and beyond the upper ledger lines. Her CD “Simply Mad” is art in action. At its best. Moving you, caressing you, feeding you what you need. With such total authentic real jazz, and subliminal bebop hip cat sound, stretching the outer edges of what’s already out there. What can I say? Jazz just doesn’t get any better than this. ***** 5 Stars!

Review; Simply Mad

This for me is a refreshing CD. Great tunes, good sound and nice programming in terms of sequencing of material. Mad's alto sound is good and strong, and she has her own voice. Not an easy thing to bring about. Eddie's playing is wonderful as well. The support from Ray Drummond and Akira Tana is great, and tasteful. I've buy this CD.
