It's the debut CD by The Madeira, a new Michigan-based combo led by Ivan Pongracic (formerly of The Space Cossacks). If you liked his former band (and who didn't?) you will absolutely flip over his new combo. In some ways this is probably similar to what a 3rd 'Cossacks CD would have sounded like, but he takes this group in directions that perhaps wouldn't have been possible before. It's got 13 great tunes (only one cover - they're saving the rest of the covers recorded during the sesions for this CD for a seperate CD-EP release set for 2006). Phil Dirt, Rick of The Volcanos and others were blown away when they heard advance copies of this release - this is sure to be one of the top releases of 2005!

This CD rocks...

This CD really gets the fire in the belly burning. Highly recommended for people who like energetic and way melodic tunes. Makes you think of the ocean even when you can't get there. Ripped this and made it into one of my mountain biking playlists...oooh.

Surfing the outer reaches of space, They landed in the far deasert.

From The Space Cossacks to the Madeira is like a caterpillar
into the butterfly. The music keeps evolving and is always new and one of a kind. This cd is like a shot of adrenaline for the surf sound. You will enjoy it. I wonder what Ivan will come up with next? It would be another AWSOME change for surf. Until then CRANK IT BABY!

One of the best new surf bands
author: Alex Hoffman
The Madeira's Sandstorm is probably the best surf album of 2005/2006. It's familiar in that it picks up where the Space Cossacks left off, but remains unique due to its middle eastern surf sound. The band has an energy that rivals most surf bands and their melodies are original and never boring. The hilights of the album include Burning Mirage, Rogue Wave and The Secret Route.

I really really really REALLY dig that Madiera CD! Ivan is on fire...

I really really really REALLY dig that Madiera CD! Ivan is on fire... his Eastern Euro sound slathers up sunscreen, fries a little falafel, and rides roughshod across a desert of sounds. 2005 was a great year for instro... sounds like 2006 will be better!
Thanks,
Brian Parrish,
host of the Casbah
