These crazy musicians without borders from the S.F. Bay Area have stirred up another batch of tunes. Call it Ska, Polka, Klezmer, Celtic, Eastern European Gypsy. Or is it Power Folk, New World or Roots -- whatever and no matter -- it’s a pleasant frenzy.
Composer/ accordionist Maggie Martin is joined by her fellow locos:
Johny Blood on tuba
Dana Burt on drums
John Hensley on trumpets
Lawrence Jarach on trombone
J.X. Jones on sax and clarinet
Lewis Wallace on bass guitar
Gary Wium on guitars
Mad Mag’s Listening Notes:
1. Musical Priest S … a crazy variation of a trad Celtic reel with something new added
2. Pica Pica Polka ... easy going border style polka with a long tail end. Pica pica is Latin for magpie. Magpies have very long tails.
3. Sparky's Romp … a speedy ska-like number
4. Chance to Dance ... move around the dance floor with someone you love
5. Surely, Shirley … a tale of desire and possibility, retro swing
6. Mad Mod Vlad ... mad, mad polka, polka
7. Kirghiz Eyes ... mixed meter & moody
8. Magdalena's Revenge ... high energy frailach inspired
9. Are Ye Sleepin', Maggie? … a mad version of the Scottish classic
10. Cal's Waltz ... sweet waltz written in memory of my father
11. Fanfare for Eva ... canon with tuba, trombone and accordion

The CD appealed on so many levels: folk, celtic, swing and most importantly, it made me smile.
