Great old-time hipster fun
author: Antoine Boisvert
This is my first Mad Tea Party CD, but it won't be my last. The mood is energetic and fun, reminiscent of Squirrel Nut Zippers at their best, but also of Dan Zanes, Dan Hicks and the Lovin' Spoonful. This disc was made by people who were thinking about making music first, and making CDs second. That's how it should be.

Everyone Can Enjoy This Music
author: Carolina Drake, Amps Eleven
Mad Tea Party comes from Asheville, North Carolina. Their latest release, Flying Saucers, was recorded live, and listening to it feels like watching black and white Chaplin films on television, or waking up one morning to find that it is the beginning of summer. It is a fun, fresh record with songs like Indian War Whoop and I’m an old Cowhand (from the Rio Grande.) Twice I found myself urging to grab my cat and start line dancing around the bedroom while the album was playing. It asks for a celebration and it is hard to avoid feeling jumpy to the rhythm of these pieces.
The instrumentation that gives this band a unique 30’s bluegrass/old-country swing is Ami Worthen’s ukulele and Jason Krekel’s fiddle. Lora Pendelton’s springy voice contributes to the sound and fury of their circus-carnival style. This is the kind of band that can bring together somewhat disparate people. From the tattooed punk rock guy, to the hipster grandmother, to the hillbilly next door neighbor, everyone can enjoy and absorb something from this music.
