An album that causes an involuntary sigh, opens the door to letting out that seasonal tension and shoves a recliner chair under your hips. With crystalline female vocals, pure and heartfelt, with the sweet sound of mandolin, fiddle and the rich voice of acoustic guitar, December Sky is a charming way to bring your love of country folk music and your appreciation for the holiday season together in one hearty album. Covering some of your favorite carols while keeping it fresh with originals as well, Mae Robertson serves up one of the best Christmas albums that CD Baby stocks.

This is just a lovely Christmas CD. From first (John Denver and Joe Henry's "A Baby Just Like You") to last (the standard "Do You Hear What I Hear"), Robertson's crystal-clear vocals shine throughout. Too often, holiday CDs are over-produced and under-sung, losing much of their heart in the process. Not so with "December Sky," which strikes a perfect balance. Another balance struck well is that of old vs. new. Highlights include beautiful versions of "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas," "It Came Upon a Midnight Clear" and "White Christmas" (a duet with Cally Robertson, who obviously inherited her mama's voice), as well as newer holiday songs such as John Barlow Jarvis' "One Bright Star" and Steve Earle's "Nothing But a Child."

December Sky is a rich folk anthem for the season. In truth, this buoyant folk celebration is lightly tinged with pop and country, and it's all good. Everything about December Sky is first class, starting with Robertson's mellifluous voice, a warm alto that comforts like a wrap of the softest alpaca. She sings effortlessly and exudes an underlying joy in what she does. She possesses the sort of voice that creates an instant rapport with listeners of all ages. Lovely, lovely, lovely.

Some unusual choices here, but they work extremely well as folk songs and holiday anthems. Tracks include "A Baby Just Like You," by John Denver and Joe Henry, "Last Night" by Lynn Miles, "Nothing But a Child" by Steve Earle and "Every December Sky" by Beth Nielsen Chapman. Robertson's voice rings like a crystal bell and she delivers lyrics in exactly the right spirit. Even the most familiar tunes seem fresh in her kind hands.

Oh, my...like sugarplums dancing in my head...

What a wonderfully warm Christmas treat! Mae's scrumptious arrangements of familiar (and not so familiar) Christmas songs are a pure delight. I love the mother/daughter duet and look forward to hearing more of Cally on future cds. It is ever so gracious of Mae, the wonderful songstress that she is, to share her cd space with the occasional masterful instrumental. Also, I must say, I just love the Christmas ball photography and the cd design! It is quite evident that much love and creativity went into the production of this cd.

Very satisfying...combination of traditional and new Christmas music!
author: Katherine Rohsler
This CD is the perfect combination of traditional and new Christmas music. It makes me think of being a child again and having the time to notice every little gift about Christmas...the special ornaments, carolling with friends, sleighriding with the bonfire burning...and of course the surprise of presents on Christmas morning. The style of the music here is soothing and inspiring, vivid in tradition and rich in musicality. A wonderful addition to anyone's Christmas OR general music library. I LOVE Mae's music!
