    WOW! Again, WOW!

  • Excellent

I was given some work to do for this band recently and I usually never involve myself with a clients efforts as professional courtesy. But in this case I can't resist expressing wonderful surprise. They describe themselves an 'indie' band, but their work doesn't sound or feel that way. They are very professional, they sound like a band that I should hear on the radio, which I listen to a lot. There are several unexpected changes of musical style too, to the point of being polar. Astonishing to hear such versatility. This is a CD I can't help listening to often now, one of those that go on a 'regular listening' list. I recommend it to anyone who likes acceptable but adventurous music.

  • A Satisfying Variety of Music!

Ethereal, melodic, and sometimes funky, the key word to this CD is variety! Lots of different styles, which somehow mesh into a cohesive whole. The instrumentals give a nice break, without losing the overall concept of the recording. Lots of good songs; can't pick a favorite! Truly enjoyable. I play it alot.

Magellan's "A Strange Traffic of Dreams" has got it all! Keyboards and guitars combine into one dream-like sound, complimented by catchy bass riffs and smart lyrics. The chorus-enhanced vocals are smooth and enchanting. The music itself it rooted in blues, jazz, and pop, but has a psychadelic quality reminiscient of 70s Pink Floyd. The music really moves, with smart bass lines and catchy vocal hooks. Added to the mix, Magellan integrates some carefully-woven sound effects into something I like to call a "stereophonic noisescape." It is a fun album to hear! My personal favorite track is the opener, "Sound is Your Dream." Sound is your dream... that pretty much encapsulates the creative force behind this wonderful album. It is well worth a listen!

From THE EDGE OF TIME: "...soft prog-rock with some The Beatles type 70's rock influences...mild and soft prog/atmospheric rock tracks..." MagellanMusic - http://www.magellanmusic.com

From: GAJOOB: "Magellan has been recording in some form or another for over 20 years. This is their 27th release and runs through a variety of styles including progressive rock and simple guitar pop. It's the more progressive numbers which thankfully provide the meat of the album here. Lush, Beatlesque arrangements with a shimmer of Alan Parsons and plenty of surprises along the way. Highly recommended."

From Raging Smolder Music Review: "...A Strange Traffic of Dreams, Magellan's 27th (!!) release opens with a somnolence reminiscent of Pink Floyd -- though much lighter and airy -- and proceeds to remind the listener, at times, of John Lennon at his most whimsical. Among the other sounds on the album are blues, blues-rock, ballads, straight-forward rock-n-roll, and jazz influenced passages. A Strange Traffic of Dreams is a serious work by a mature group of excellent songwriters." MagellanMusic - http://www.magellanmusic.com

From Aiding & Abetting Magazine: "...Magellan travels a byway of the prog rock landscape. Rather poppy, with plenty of little sound sculpture tidbits lying about. The vocals are generally filtered through one machine or another, and whatever guitars appear also sound rather mutated. Kinda in a Floyd-lite state. The lyrics and music are nowhere near as pompous and overbearing, but there is still a resemblance. I guess a comparison to the best of Alan Parsons Project is also in order. Well produced, fairly mellow, but still adventurous, pop fare. You could do a lot worse...The sound may be inoffensive, but Magellan still traverses some fertile waters. Prog-pop without the cheese." From New Music Central: "... I loved it! Just the perfect kinda tape to have on and hang out on a nice weekend morning, or at least a tape to make you think such: this is the kinda reclusive overly creative half cousin to rock & roll that I really take a shine too. It has a certain playfulness to it, much like Buckingham's stuff, right down to the fuzzy guitar waa waa waa-ing in the background. Also, they've done a fine job of layering their sounds, more than you'd expect out of a 10 piece band, much less a 3 piece. Whereas most alterna-schtick seeks to beat you down with angst and scrape out your eardrums with a rusty spoon, the focus here is finesse, and the lyrics seem to venture into that as yet unexplored territory by cookie cutter Bush-types BEYOND how much life sucks, and self deprecation. It has a quirky little intelligence to it, maybe Einstein meets Jughead. And as to exactly what their sound is, they do have a big Allan Parsons Project feel to them, I'll admit that, but they really do run the full gamut of styles that is available given their instuments, talents, and the bounds of good taste... From Incredibly Small Concert Hall: "...a lot like John Lennon...a little Pink Floydish... The Beatles....Neil Young....great sound quality...great playing, writing and musicianship. Each song varies with the experience...Magellan definately gives you the feeling that they wanted you to have 'A Strange Traffic of Dreams." MagellanMusic - http://www.magellanmusic.com

From FAO CASA GAZETTE (Rome, Italy): "Magellan - A Strange Traffic of Dreams. Pop-space rock with echoes of the Beatles, a sprinkle of ballads and lots of rhythm. This beast is hard to categorize but easy to like: Cheerful and bright wrapped in an aura of musical maturity, cohesion and diversity that demands your ear !!! Exciting." From THE INDIE ZONE: "Well, I have one word... Eclectic. On an overall basis, I'd describe this as a soft rock album with a late seventies feel... Stylistically, the album is quite varied."

From Stormbringer Magazine: "The opening track is 'Sound Is Your Dream', great track which starts with quite a lot of sound effects before going into a mellow song. The vocals are soft and dreamy and the guitar sound is distorted. Reminds me a bit of early Pink Floyd... Track three is 'If Only I Could', is an excellent track and a song very much in the vein of John Lennon, the type of music he was playing before his death... 'Yes Mildred (There Was Life On Mars)' is a superb instrumental with some great distorted guitar... The tracks on this album have a kind of Alan Parson feel to them and Magellan cover a range of song styles, blues, ballads, rock'n'roll, progressive rock with a 70's feel to them. I really like this album aand it comes highly recommended. (for a complete review of all songs, see the site)." MagellanMusic - http://www.magellanmusic.com
