Cult "Soft-rocker" Comedian Magic Cyclops Releases New Deluxe Edition CD
Davenport, IA - Musician, cult comedian and walking contradiction Magic Cyclops, known for his outrageous, rabble-rousing live performances and keyboard-based soft-rock has released Best of Synthesizer Hits: Deluxe Edition. The completely repackaged and remastered CD includes all tracks from the sold-out Best of Synthesizer Hits CD released a year ago, plus five previously unreleased demo tracks and two videos. The CD is available directly from Magic Cyclops' website, www.magicyclops.com, from CD Baby (www.cdbaby.com) and from select independent record stores throughout the United States.
The CD, released by Global Popstar records, is already getting attention and airplay from DJs in-the-know.
"(Best of Synthesizer Hits) is an unabashed amalgamation of soft rock, 80's new wave, lounge, and pop appreciation. Think Burt Bacharach meets Devo," describes Guy Montag from KFJC FM in Los Altos Hills, CA. "His songs are short, soothing, rhythmically lethargic, mellow, and more than slightly strange."
"Magic Cyclops defines alternative entertainment and genuine mischief all in one," describes Denver-based pirate-radio host Sid Pink.
Magic Cyclops, who also goes by the moniker "the Quad City Madman" has been growing a cult following by taking his one-man show on the road, playing across the United States with like-minded innovative acts such as Polyphonic Spree, Captured By Robots, the Frogs, Mr. Pacman, King Missle, and the late Wesley Willis.
His act is simultaneously a concert and a character-driven comedy sketch which must be seen to be believed.
With his trademark blue K-Mart jumpsuit, Hulk Hogan headband, and British accent of questionable authenticity (he claims to be a native of Davenport, IA) "Magic" wraps his airy, soft-rock mini-anthems with lengthy, ludicrous, simultaneously megalomaniacal and self-deprecating monologues which inevitably devolve into confrontations with the few dullards in the audience that don't get it. The dullards, of course, never stand a chance against his razor sharp wit. As such, Magic Cyclops certainly must hold the record for "Getting in the Most Fist-fights with Audience Members" for any performer in the soft-rock genre.
Ironically, Best of Synthesizer Hits plays it straight as a soft-rock album throughout and has the potential to be as equally enjoyed by smirking cutting-edge hipsters and Celine Dion-loving grandmas alike. That is, as long as Grandma doesn't listen to the lyrics too closely. The lofty ballads, "Rainbow of Pain," and "I Love This Feeling," for example, would be perfectly at home on adult contemporary radio were they not about menstruation and "getting a handjob from a trucker," respectively.
For most people, Best of Synthesizer Hits: Deluxe Edition will be the first opportunity to own these essential Magic Cyclops tracks on CD. Like much of Magic Cyclops' merchandise (such as the Magic Cyclops personalized Iowa license plate and the Magic Cyclops Halloween costume), the original Best of Synthesizer Hits sold out almost immediately after its limited release and remains a rare and highly coveted piece of Magicycloplia. The demand for this re-release suggests that despite his career-long tradition of DIY production and marketing, Magic Cyclops' CDR-spool distribution days are numbered.
His expectations for sales of the CD are not surprisingly proportionate to his ego.
"I'll be sold out before the end of the year," he says. "Most musicians write filler material; I only write hits."
