Album Notes

Thirty years have passed since the Táncház phenomenon was born in Budapest. Since that time, the movement has grown, stepped past the boundaries of Hungary, happily dissolved most of the barriers between young, urban folk musicians and their elderly, authentic village "masters," and provided the world with a unique, new model for reviving traditional music and dance. This CD is the first compilation to showcase the North American echo of the Hungarian Táncház movement. The CD's breadth - involving a good selection of the nearly twenty groups that exist from Vancouver to New York - the scope of its instrumental music and singing - presenting styles from Dunántul to Moldva - and its surprisingly accomplished musicianship all stand as testament to the power of this amazing revival movement.
