"Mahajibee is a tight band and this CD shows that. See them live, too.
You will not be disappointed.”
- Jim Weber, Blues Society of Western Pennsylvania
This Pittsburgh-based band is still humbled by what has transpired over the last nine years. They have shared the spotlight with an assortment of professional oldies, rock and blues artists, performed at some of the largest Tri-State Festivals, Blues Festivals, Community Festivals, and Summertime Concert Series’. Mahajibee is honored to have participated in local fundraisers and have performed for 9-1-1, Katrina victims of New Orleans, The Sago Mine disaster victims of West Virginia, St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital in Memphis, TN and Disabled American Veterans.
On Saturday, October 11, 2008, Mahajibee Blues performed at the third largest blues festival in the nation, The 23rd Arkansas Blues & Heritage Festival (better known as “The King Biscuit Blues Festival”) in Historic Helena, AR. They were picked from over 200 artists, bands and performers who applied to participate in the festival's “Emerging Artist Contest.” This contest has created excitement in the music world as “Blues Revue” and “Beale Street Caravan” (nationally syndicated radio program), joined as the national media sponsors.

*Bottle tree in front of the “Cadillac Shack”, Hopson Plantation, Shack Up Inn, Clarksdale Mississippi. Michael Tevis 2004. I chose this photo for the cover because I spent a week in the Cadillac Shack and I wanted the cover to reflect the soul of southern culture and folklore.
About the tree: from “Bottle Tree A Vanishing Southern Tradition”
“…the bottle tree is now an increasing rarity as ancient folk beliefs and customs fall from common usage. The origins of the tree go back to the 9th century Congo where hand-blown glass was hung on huts and trees as a talisman against evil. The practice consists of removing the foliage from a tree (preferably a cedar because all the branches point heavenward) and placing the tree in the yard of the house. The bare branches are then covered with colorful glass bottles that attract any evil spirit that may be lurking near the house. The spirit becomes mesmerized by the play of sunlight through the colorful glass and becomes trapped inside the bottle. When the wind blows past them, the moans of ensnared spirits can be heard whistling on the breeze.” (www.cruger.com)
“Blue was an especially potent spirit repellent and the bright colors of the bottle trees were used to attract evil or ancestral spirits and keep them away from the home...Bottle trees are seldom seen these days, even in the backcountry of the Deep South, though blue-painted doors and windowsills still are.
It is an ancient belief that blue, the color of sky and water, has the power to repel or overcome evil. Blue is the color of dreams, spirituality, of distance, and the heavenly realm. It is likely that many of those who still paint their doors blue or make bottle trees today do so because of tradition rather than belief.” (www.sherryaustin.com)

** “The shotgun house plays a role in the folklore and culture of the south. Superstition holds that ghosts and spirits are attracted to shotgun houses because they may pass straight through them, and that some houses were built with doors intentionally misaligned to deter these spirits. They also often serve as a convenient symbol of life in the south. Elvis Presley was born in a shotgun house, the Neville Brothers grew up in one, and Robert Johnson is said to have died in one…”

Guitar nailed to a tree next to the famous *“Hollywood Café” – home of the fried dill pickle! (1130 Old Commerce Road, Robinsonville, Mississippi, 38664), on old 88 just off Highway 61, **“The Blues Highway.” Photo by Michael Tevis 2004.
* “The famously atmospheric and funky Hollywood Café is one of the official local thrills. It made the country charts by being memorialized in popular song “Walking in Memphis” by Marc Cohen. Go into the café and see the piano where Cohen wrote the song. Linger a bit around the old 88 and then do the smart thing. Sit down and order. Make sure you have a mess of fried pickles — dill pickles, coated with a lush cornmeal batter. Traveler thinks of them as exotic, tasty pickle pekoras. There’s great cole slaw and distinctive vegetables prepared in down home fashion. I’ll have some fried okra please. As always, Veggievores, do ascertain which of today’s vegetables are meatless and were not prepared with pot likker — then dig in and enjoy.” www.topquarkia.com
** “Called The Blues Highway, because it carried so many bluesmen from the Delta and Freedom Road because it led out of the Jim Crow South, Highway 61 carried tens of thousands of Delta citizens north during the Great Migration. In the process, they transformed America.” The Delta Center for Culture and Learning at Delta State University. www.blueshighway.org
