Album Notes

"Nick Cave meets Johnny Cash"
-The Cincinnati Enquirer

"Mournful songs (which mix the moods and textures of Leonard Cohen, Johnny Cash, Tom Waits and Nick Cave)...A striking cd"
- St. Louis Magazine

"With Their Appalachian echoes & imaginative new lyrics, Orton's songs reach straight for the audience"
-St. Louis Post Dispatch

"Jars you to the strangeness of this American landscape...Deserted fairgrounds, unlit country roads, sawdust floored barrooms, vandalized cemeteries and overstayed debutante balls...Born of inner necessity"
-Amazon.com

"Melodies that cross numerous genres ranging from country to rock to cabaret... lovely Faulkneresque stories set to music".

"A dark & original slice of Americana"
-apple i-tunes

A mix of Blues, Folk, Country, Cabaret & vintage 60's Garage Rock, The Malediction's sound has affectionately been described as, "Country Noir" or "Gothic Americana".

According to bandleader, Kevin Orton: "It's all just Folk music really...Maybe aggressive Folk but Folk music at heart...I tend to write songs about people who are un-insured".

The Maledictions have their roots in Orton's 2003 solo album, FEMME NOIR, which featured a number of guest artists including The Violent Femmes' Gordon Gano. Soon after, Orton formed The Maledictions and 2005 saw the release of IDLE HANDS.

The band is currently gigging with a new crop of songs, some of which will be featured in an upcoming EP. A new album is also in the works.

MALEDICTION (mal-e-dik-shen): "curse, excecration"-Webster's Ninth New Collegiate Dictionary

DICTIONARY (dik-shen-air-ee):"A malevolent literary device for cramping the growth of a language and making it hard and inelastic"-The Devil's Dictionary

FEMME NOIR is also currently available on CD baby.

Americana Joy Division

In parts, a sort of an Americana Joy Division comes to mind. Elsewhere acoustic & cinematic.

End Of The Line
author: Scott Warren

Heard these guys doing "End OF The Line" on Joey Reynolds. They were extremely moving. None of which prepared me for this thing. Some dark madness, interspersed with glimmers of sad beauty like "Line". Now I know why they're called The Maledictions.

Alt Country With Gothic Edge
author: Mike DeSalla

Heard some cuts on WFOV. Sold. The dark dramatics of Nick Cave. Gutter woe of Waits. Townes Van Zandt mournful ballads. All rolled into one. My kind of thing. Too arch & over the top for navel gazing fans of Will Oldham's Death Folk, but ploughing the same field. Alt. Country with a Gothic edge. Fave tracks: Red House, Rain & Water Wide.

Edgar Allen Poe Sings
author: P.P.

If Edgar Allen Poe fronted a band, it might sound like this. Gothic skies, missing persons & yearning dirges that bring the likes of Tom Waits, Leonard Cohen & Townes Van Zandt to mind. All guided by a deep baritone that touches on Jim Morrison & Nick Cave territory. Perfect for fans of Will Oldham, Jason Molina & The White Stripes.
