"These women take no prisoners." - Dirty Linen. This music is smart, fresh, female folk-pop. As radical as it is acoustic. An impressive song cycle, I'm Not Like This, is both solid and twisted. It stands up to repeated listening.

Album Notes

The Malvinas are . . . a feisty blend of jazz, traditional and folk-pop. With roots all over North America, the Malvinas pull together a broad palette of regional colors including: the Blues-tinged grooves of the deep South, the spicy Cajun flavors of Louisiana, the Celtic modes of Eastern Canada and the libertarian troubadour tradition of the Lone Star State.

Alternating lead vocalists, tight harmonies and quirky instrumentation (dobro, guitar, tenor guitar, mandolins and violin) create a high energy sound that never forgets that to make great music, you start with a great song.

The Malvinas are . . .

Lisa "I am not interested in what you think" Markley
(banjo, one very large jumbo guitar and vocals)

After graduating from North Texas with a degree in music, Lisa melted down her trombone to make a belly button ring. Formerly a member of the way cool bands Akoustik Nerve and Chattervox, Lisa is inspired by the music of Joni Mitchell and the Subdudes. She thinks that Patricia Barber is just the coolest thing since she discovered fresh cilantro sometime in the Spring of 1998. An award winning songwriter with a inimitable groove oriented edge, Lisa released her first solo project, Goddess of Groove in the fall of 2000.

Gina "the hopeful romantic" Forsyth
(guitar, violin, vocals)

Since fleeing the Bible Belt an undisclosed number of years ago, Gina has been (in no particular order): a fiddle player in several Cajun bands for the last twelve years (in the same one for the last seven), a folk DJ on a college station for ten years, a college student for nine years, a civil servant for ten months, a movie extra for a day, and a drummer in a punk rock band for all of five minutes. Her favorite artists include the McGarrigle Sisters, Ralph Stanley, Belton Richard, and a host of friends she has played and recorded with over the last several years. Her solo CD, You Are Here was released in 2001.

Beth "the irritating optimist" Cahill
(mandolins, tenor guitar and vocals)

Beth decided to pursue music full time after nearly being crushed to death at a Violent Femmes concert. She never gets tired of listening to Glenn Gould's recordings of the Goldberg Variations and trying to explain 100 Years of Solitude by Gabriel Garcia Marquez. Her influences include: Rickie Lee Jones, The Roches, Richard Thompson and The Replacements. Her solo CD, Hitching to La Paz was released in 1999 after hitch-hiking across Bolivia. She is from Canada and has no sense of humor.

I'm Not Like This
author: John Ask
I bought this CD the Image Warehouse a block off the courthouse square on a warm Texas summer Saturday night when I was fortunate enough to see the ladies for the 1st time. This tiny venue provided an intimate setting; maybe 50 of us curious souls ventured out of the safety and boredom of our East Texas (Athens) homes to stop, look, listen, and interact with the most impressive female artists since Joni Mitchell ventured south of the border 4 decades ago. The show was such a spiritual experience for me as The Malvinas touched emotions I forgot I had that I am probably biased toward this CD, so I rated it 4 stars, but rate that night's performance in 2002 as 5 star. Beth was barefoot; Beth, Lisa, and Gina all signed their poster for me promoting the CD. I am not a Folk Music enthusiast; I am a simple man who believes happiness can't be achieved in this life without music. The Malvinas did for me in 2002 (and again in Tyler at Rick's in 2003) what The Ramones did for me January 8, 1979 at The Palladium in Dallas (Hi Lisa); they presented music fresh, new, stripped down, simple, and pure that was meant to be heard live and close-up. Whereas The Ramones were a (4 year) after high school PEP RALLY, The Malvinas were incredibly sobering and almost, if not, melancholy from a male, mid-life (45 yrs) perspective. I would recommend this CD to anyone who's dared to venture outside Top 40, and may The Lord help those of you who haven't. I bought all 3 girls' solo CD's in Spring of 2003; 1 each from Lisa and Beth, and 2 from Gina and they were good enough to autograph them. All are good, but my favorite is Beth's "Hitching To LaPaz". The show and album (I'm Not..) helped make 2002 a good year for me; the only other shows I saw were "Still On The Hill" and "CSNY"; meanwhile, I sang tenor every Sunday morning at The Methodist Church, a far cry from fronting the Power Pop (benevolent Punk) band "Adult Situation" back in 1981-83. Cheers to The Malvinas, CSNY, Joni, The Ramones, Adult Situation, and many of the Methodists. -John Ask 3/22/08 (51st birthday)
